On top of that, most teachers get at least 10-16 hours worth of "personal time" a month for sickness/additional time off. So a 35 hour week job only 66% of the year, which pays a minimum of $30k for the first year no experience just about any and everywhere, and can easily translate to $100k in 10-15 years.

Gym and Art teachers have no homework, and doing 1-1.5 hours afterschool in a club a 2-3 times a week nets teachers another few hundred bucks a month in pay, in some states it gives them another "step" in pay.

As for spending the entire summer redesigning the curriculum, that's so laughable all one has to do is look at their credit card for vacations across the country/continent and winery visits or a 2nd job as a camp councilor/teacher.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying. Teachers are exposing their naked alliance with Democrats at the same time they are vastly increasing systemic racism by refusing to teach poor kids. I’m not the first to call this out, and I suspect that it will become a rallying cry in a month or two.

She’s one of the teachers suing the Florida Department of Education for mandating school districts to resume in-person classes. The judge ruled the mandate is unconstitutional.

“It was an absolute sign of respect for the profession, for what teachers do and caring for their safety and well-being and acknowledging that they have the right to safe and healthy working conditions,” said Wendy Doromal, president of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association.

But the fight is far from over. The Florida Department of Education is appealing the ruling, which automatically puts a stay on the judge’s injunction. That means until the appeal process runs its course, the state’s order remains in effect.

We asked our local teachers union president: Why keep fighting if it could take months to get a final ruling?

“Let me tell you why the fight is worth it because lives are worth the fight, because people’s health are worth a fight, because health and lives should trump economics and political agendas,” Doromal said.

The state’s fight is being funded by taxpayers. The department of education confirms more than $600,000 in legal fees have already been spent. An attorney in the case says the appeals process could cost the state the same if not more.

“That money could have gone to schools; it could have gone to people who are suffering because they can’t get their unemployment benefits because of a terrible state system; it could have gone to people being evicted,” Doromal said.

Public employees should not be allowed to unionize at all.

As a public employee myself--a public school teacher--I have the right to say that despite what many of my colleagues believe, we as public employees should not have the right to unionize. I also believe that public teachers should by law be prohibited from striking (actually, no public employee should be allowed to strike). No other than Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself said he didn't believe government employees should be permitted to unionize. He was right.

Some might say I'm hurting myself by daring to speak out against my own interests. Hogwash. I simply am smart enough and unselfish enough to realize that I hold a unique position as a taxpayer-paid employee. I am presently a member of a teacher's union and while in the business world was a member of several unions, from the CWA and IBEW to the Teamsters to the SEIU. (Only the Teamsters did I like or respect, FWIW.)

I'm sorry, fellow teachers, but our jobs are vastly different from private sector jobs. We are paid by the taxpayers, every day citizens. As such, we owe them a duty to perform our jobs, which aren't the same as private sector jobs. When we sluff off on the job, when we strike, we cause greater harm to the public than does a striking UPS plant or a striking Caterpillar plant or a striking UAW plant.

Every person in NYC who protested budget cuts--as if no one in the private sector is experiencing budget cuts, those NYC employee bastards--should be fired. Immediately. Fire every damn one of them and forever forbid them from holding a public sector job again.

In Germany school teachers are well paid and well pensioned, mostly tenured federal workers. But that comes at the price of not being able to unionize/strike. Federal employees are prohibited from going on strike.

My daughter is ahead in math n doing algebra 2 on her own knows algebra 1 and geometry 1 already. I asked school to place her from algebra 1 to geometry, they said no. Guidance counselor (pronoun she , her hers) , thats how she refers to self, said my daughter will be with older kids and that's not good.

I told them to test her so she doesn't waste whole year learning nothing. They said they can't test algebra 1.

+10,000! I've been saying this forever. It makes zero sense. Just set a prevailing wage rate that is set up your state legislature. Allow elected officials to decide what is a fair rate. A local school district shouldn't have the ability to raise my taxes as much as they do and the goal of the union is to raise those taxes as high as possible to line their pockets in the process.

Also allow bad teachers to be fired. How often does a teacher leave a school outside of a spouse needing to relocate or they literally fucked a student? Once you're in, you're in for life if you so choose. A large chunk of people are not good at their jobs or just going through the motions and teachers aren't exempt from that.

Teachers also shouldn't be allowed to get full pensions until they hit social security age (63? can never remember). Also cap wages with COL increases that match previous years inflation. Why do you get paid double at 55 for the same thing you were doing at 30? Make it a living wage of course, but the last two years of my mom's career as a flipping art teacher she was pulling in about 105k. It's my mom, but let's be honest, that's a fucking expensive babysitter watching your 4th grade make shitty art. She should have been making 60-70k tops.

That's not entirely false. They should support her with extra advanced material, but skipping classes can have negative social effects on the kid. Still it should be the kid's and parent's choice after careful explanation and discussion if the kid is simply too good and would otherwise waste a year. I checked out all of the Pacific Northwest states. After family and I checked out boise we all liked it. It reminded me of CA when I was a kid. Lots of kids playing outside without parents, seemed like a much better environment to grow up in. I also like doing outdoor things and while CA does have some great places everything seems like more a hassle. I have a lot of great memories but gave up on it getting better, the state has really went downhill in my lifetime.

Work wise I'll be taking a big haircut in pay but my wife might not. Taxes and fees are about 40% less.

I do hear some concern at times that the clock is ticking towards pension fund meltdown, but denial is strong.
