Overtime abuse at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has run so rampant that 13 cops could end up earning around $300,000 or more each this year, the Bergen Record reported. Some 131 Port Authority employees earned enough overtime in the first nine months of the year to double their annual salaries, the paper said. One cop recorded an average of 100 hours a week of work, the paper said, while the top 10 OT earners averaged 46 extra hours per week.

Don't these creeps jack up their pension by working overtime too. Then you wonder so many are incarcerated-how else can they justify this pay.

21   indigenous   2014 Dec 26, 10:43am

For firemen and police they also claim workers comp and go out on disability which has the added plus of not paying tax on their pensions from that point on.

It's NJ. Just about every rep is democrat in this state. The Port Authority is a joke police department that mans the tolls/bridges. They raise them each year and this is where the money goes. It's always been known that these jobs are only for friends and family of political figures in NJ. No one gets hired there without a phone call from the right people. You look at the demographics of the politicians in Bergen/Hudson county and you do the math.

I think SF is so left leaning that it has a higher than normal share of cop haters. So the cops are GOP voters, while taking advantage of their union benefits.

Sactly, I did not say that but you somehow inferred it, as goes more along with your "I will point out your illogic". Funny most of the time you are the one suffering from this common malady.

sent the banks off of the tracks since, say, the Garn St-Germain was just a bad idea being peddled by industry.

That part he has right as that is when the bank starting centralizing. It is also when the banks had to demonstrate that they were "good citizens" and needed "public organizations" to vouch for them ergo the CRA. Which was started by Carter and completely morphed by Clinton.

Once again this book explains it: "Fragile by Design", written by a Columbia business school professor.

You said about cops "The vast majority vote their pocket book, IOW Democrat." and "Ds get elected by public unions" and "it stands to reason" that cops are voting democrat. There really isn't much logic or connection there anyway, but the implication (the only thing available since you are never willing to stand up and make a definative statement under any circumstance, I can see why you would use Aquinas and Aristotle) is that cops are voting in democrats to office as a quid pro quo for generous benefits and salaries. The logic problem is there is no evidence at all the cops are actually voting democrat. Your logic goes unions are democratic voters> cops belong to unions> cops are voting democrat. I realize you really aren't very good a logic but even you should see the fallacy in this.

49   theoakman   2014 Dec 27, 2:58am

You guys all need to stop talking about this. The Port Authority are not a bunch of police officers. They are political appointees masking as ones. It doesn't matter which way cops in SF vote. This is New Jersey and New York. The port authority has historically been a pit of political appointees from Bergen and Hudson county in NJ along with the city government of New York. The majority of political members in these areas are democrat.

The makeup of the Port Authority of NY/NJ has nothing to do with real cops and definitely has nothing to do with anything in San Francisco. Regardless of someone's views, it is a reasonable assumption that most Port Authority members are Democrats and it has nothing to do with which way police unions vote.

WTF are you babbling about. PA recruits, hires and sends their cops to a police academy just like anyone else. PA cops aren't political appointees. The PA police are something like the 20th largest police force in the country. I read somewhere over 700 million people and god only knows how much cargo go through PA facilities a year. I think dealing with that volume of people and property qualifies them as real cops.

An awful lot of "reasonable" assumptions going on without any basis other than I said so.

You don't seem to be following. You don't get a job as a "port authority police officer" unless you are a relative or friend of someone already in the department or a politician. They don't do any real police work. They move cones. They don't "deal with volume". They sit in their cars and do nothing. It's all for show. Some people have gone through those tolls illegally and essentially skipped over 100k in tolls through their lifetime. Do you think you rack up 200k in overtime by actually doing work?

"You read". That's exactly the problem. Anyone who's lived within 5 miles of the GWB knows that the whole agency is a joke and a money pit.

Yes I read. I didn't have time to go count everyone going through PA properties. Perhaps you would like to give it a try for a year of so and report back to us if the count is wrong.

You are saying you've lived within 5 miles of the GWB? So have I, starting probably before you were born and as recently as 2001, on both sides of the river. I don't know the whole agency is a joke and a money pit. There's plenty of political patronage no doubt. They also manage billions of dollars in public assets including 6 airports including 2 of the busiest in the country, 7 major ports, and a bunch of bridges and tunnels. Usually managing them pretty well considering how well anything else in NY/NJ runs.

What your beef with the PA, your sister get boffed by someone from the PA or something?

53   theoakman   2014 Dec 27, 6:12am

What your beef with the PA, your sister get boffed by someone from the PA or something?

Lol, what's my beef? The fact that it's gonna cost $30 to cross the GWB by 2020 at this rate.

What's with you and your fanatical defending of an agency that pays out 200k in overtime to an "officer"?

These guys must need a good deal of specialized training just to know what to do in situations in which they have to distinguish jurisdictions, say, US Customs versus CBP, ICE and Postal Inspector, etc. Just making sense of your story and figuring out what part of it you own and other agencies have to manage must take some informed judgement.

I couldn't handle it: shoot someone for being black in the wrong township and some asshole will inject race into it! And which doughnut shops and hookers belong to which agency?

Then there's pronouncing "Poe-ut uh-THAH-tee" like the genetic-trash descendant of 19th-century old Europe rejects which you are.

Scorsese should make a movie about this, with the thickest possible accents, the longest voice-overs, and multiple period musical numbers disguised as plot development. Gritty, tough, tough, gritty...

"Jimmy and me, see, we dint know how gooud we hahd it. I grabbed the vig on the shippin' containuhs while Jimmy gave the inspectahs the run-around. It was like we was robbin' a bank wid no cahps arahnd!"

Yea, and everything else in NY/NJ is going to cost just as much. It's the price for living there and always has been "as far back as". Stop whining or move somewhere else.

I'm not fanatically defending anything. I said they do a pretty good job. Not a fantastic job, but pretty good. Did you actually read your own article btw? It says the PA felt that paying overtime was cheaper than bringing on new people. Maybe that was a good call, maybe not. But realistically 190 million in overtime in an 8 billion dollar budget isn't the end of the world. It makes nice headlines though.
