There are numerous commentators who tout the nonsense of Money not buying happiness ...

http://iusedtohavehair.com/2014/01/20/money-doesnt-bring-happiness

http://www.studymode.com/essays/Money-Doesn%27t-Bring-Happiness-1622884.html

I will say one thing ... Corporate America, meaning engaging them, working for them, etc, will definitely NOT buy happiness. Corporate America sucks!

But money, by itself, can most definitely lead to happiness, if you're judicious about how you allocate your resources and know how to enjoy your free time.

“Money is like sex,” I said. “It seems much more important when you don’t have any…”

I'd say that it's like a juicy sirloin, after having eaten salad for a week.

It's funny hearing people that don't have money talking down money. What a bunch a manure. It's not just sirloin steak. It's like going to a Brazilian steak house and having all kinds of steak. So yummy....

Oh man, I completely miss those Brazilian Churrasco houses in Rio. Talk about food heaven.

One of my great experiences in Rio was getting in a swim on Ipanema beach early morning, but then, getting out of the client site early (cancelled meetings, etc), going to a Thermas for a shag, but then, finishing the day at a barbecue.

210   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 1:36am

Rin, that $3.6k is per year, not per month. I'd suspect your hobby costs about $3k/mo.

The $1k per month cost fir the Porsche includes depreciation too, on a 3-5 yr replacement cycle.

It's every 2 or 3 weeks, so it's not too costly. Sometimes, if I have an extremely annoying week, I may go up, just to unwind. The hotel is expensed, as there's always some conference/meeting up north.

Plus, dividends re-invest quarterly and our company's bonuses are twice a year.

Normally, a person in my shoes tends to get burned by women, a lot, for time/money/etc, expecting me to waste my bonuses on them instead of buying more equities.

This system of mine has isolated the problem.

I allow them to *friend zone* me and then, I can have those routine activities like going out canoeing, etc, w/o the overhead of an insipid relationship where ppl lie to each other about love, belonging issues, etc.

Since unlike the usual *friend zone* person, who's constantly pining for love or some action, I just simply don't care.

Porsche

The Porsche does the same thing as my Accord, it gets me from point A to point B. The Accord is paid off and requires less than $1K per year of scheduled maintenance.

And if she's actually interested in me romantically, I walk away.

214   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 2:36am

Rin, why do you waste time and money on the women at all if you are not even interested in their poon or reproductivity?

215   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 2:45am

Rin, here are some of the things that you are missing:
1. Massive acceleration with dynamic torque distribution enhanced handling. Porsche and BMW charge an arm and leg for it, but Acura is offering it at reasonable price under the moniker SH-AWD. At least upgrade that Accord to a new TLX, which costs a small fraction of what you are blowing on the girls. Winter trips to Montreal is safer with AWD.

2. Unprotected sex with an exclusive partner.

3. Not being timed. A full weekend with one of your providers would probably cost much more. You are comparing timeshare to full ownership or lease. You can get a Porsche for a couple hundred for the day but it is not the same as even a 3 yr lease at $1k/mo.

4. Volunteer house cleaner, and gift shopper for other family members; I.e. A personal assistant.

Luxury cars tend to have more standard safety features and meaningful engine power.

Accord is a safe, fine car, but I find Honda's engines tend to lack low-end torque. It may have 300 HP, but you may have to rev it up a bit. I like to drive in the low rpm range even at highway speed.

I hope they will make an affordable sedan with a 5000 lb curb weight and a 600 lb/ft engine. Fuel efficiency does not matter.

Will do, after another 20K miles. But as you can probably guess, I don't care much for vehicles, aside from their utilitarian purposes.

Rin, why do you waste time and money on the women at all if you are not even interested in their poon or reproductivity?

First of all, I'm a heterosexual male. As someone here said, "I bo*nk, therefore I am." I do not believe in the concept that those who aspire to conduct R&D, must be sexless drones.

For me, those relationships a.k.a so-called meaningful associations full of lies and half-truths ended a few years ago. After dating Alanis Morrisette, I was done.

2. Unprotected sex with an exclusive partner.

At most, this person will be a '5' or a '6'. There is no way a '7' or an '8' is going with me without the Porsche, the country club membership, and all the other trappings of a young executive. And then, she'll be a high maintenance b*tch. This job has already driven me insane. Why do you think I'm on PatNet?

I don't want to have to deal with that high maint horseshit, after work on a regular basis.

220   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 4:37am

4000lbs, 300hp, SH-AWD, dynamic cruise control with automatic following/braking and lane keeping during the 4-5 hours drive on I-91 to Montreal. I see Rin spending $40 - 60k on an Acura TLX or MDX (the latter has the best crash results among any car not requiring a commercial driver's license) before the year is over.

Edit: just saw your "will do" after posting. Haha. Engineering minds think alike.

221   Peter P   2014 Sep 2, 4:40am

I test drove a ZDX. It had 300 HP but it felt a bit slow.

Does the TLX have memory steering? It certainly looks like a very good car.

222   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 4:45am

ZDX did not have the new direct ignition engine. The new direct ignition engine delivers much more lower end torque than previous Honda engines. I just bought a new MDX with SH-AWD. It drives like a sports car despite being an SUV. In fact turns faster than my previous BMW 5 series sedan without dynamic torque distribution. The X6 with dynamic torque distribution similarly equipped would cost close to $100k.

223   Rin   2014 Sep 2, 4:52am

Reality says

Not being timed. A full weekend with one of your providers would probably cost much more.

Actually, I'd spent a weekend with one in Malaysia. No, that wasn't the Tia Carrerre look-a-like.

Here's the closest photo on the net, which bears a resemblance ...

Still, she's quite attractive despite not looking like an actress.

The point is that around the globe, where the dollar takes you further, getting temporary low maintenance arrangements is very doable. I know an account manager in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh city, who's got himself a full time translator/maid/lover esc*rt over there. I don't see him coming back to the UK anytime soon :-)

224   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 4:55am

Rin,

I was not asking why you spend money and time on providers abroad, but why money and time on women with whom you are not planning on having sex or baby.

With more shacking abroad and "I don't give a shit, my way or highway," on top of your career success, you will soon be pulling 7 ' s and 8's.

225   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 4:59am

Yes, that guy in Saigon is enjoying a lease, not paying for a time share or by the hour rental. Not only is she exclusive for him, I bet he could tell her to secure a 3 some for him if he wants to. Don't be afraid of woman. Just because women picked meat heads over you in college doesn't mean you are still at the lower rung now. Men's value increase over time if you make something of yourself.

Are you talking about my platonic female acquaintances in New England/New York?

If so, then isn't that obvious? Can you take a male friend to a candlelit dinner and have a dance? Even the gay guys living in Boston's South End wouldn't do that in public, outside of Provincetown.

227   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 5:02am

Why taking anyone to candlelight dinner or dance if you don't want to plough her? Why waste your time?

228   Rin   2014 Sep 2, 5:04am

Yes, that guy in Saigon

Come on, we all know that the British and American ex-pats in Southeast Asia are cleaning house with the ladies. That isn't news.

The thing is that on our continent, we have women with borderline and histrionic personality disorders, esp once they hit their late 20s, if they didn't have it earlier.

229   HydroCabron   2014 Sep 2, 5:04am

I don't say a word to anyone unless there's a chance of at least a BJ.

My days are pretty quiet.

Seriously, if a woman is handicapped, you know it's not going to happen, so just ignore her.

230   Rin   2014 Sep 2, 5:06am

Reality says

That's the whole point, I enjoy the food, the atmosphere, the music, etc. That's the difference between being a book smart nerd and a worldly person.

But as for the bo*nk, I'd rather do that Geena Davis look-a-like up in Canada, but then, never have to deal with her again, esp if she's whacked in the head.

So you see, two halves of a coin, I get the general experience of living well and having a great bo*nk without the headaches and weirdness which follow.

231   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 5:06am

Duh, obviously don't waste any time with any women past the late 20's, unless she has a meal ticket from you for having born a child for you.

Yes, but she'll develop Alanis Morrisette-itis, on the way to that age of 29. It's a continuous, not a discrete function. The good women worth dating, are gone and married during or slightly after college.

233   Ceffer   2014 Sep 2, 5:10am

Just because women wake up beside you after a date and a night of hard bonking, raging and regretting the insulting rape of their bodies, and demanding palimony, sexual harassment lawsuits, and perpetual mad, cringing guilt, doesn't mean they are bad people.

Oh they still have a choice. The two people I showed above might well be a happy couple with lots of kids.

As to what those kids look like I've seen plenty of examples of goofy looking offspring of uberhottie parents (assuming no straying) and some damn fine looking kids from seriously goofy looking parents.

Nah, another Larry Ellison type, big talker who thinks that he's clairvoyant.

But to give Larry some credit, he did envision the whole online streaming world, over 20 years ago. It's just that Oracle's platform mix wasn't what made it happen.

Rin,
Howard Hughes was married 2 or 3 times in his life. The last one lasted nearly a decade and half after dating the girl for a decade. The divorce resulted in the equivalent of about $2mil per year in alimony payment to her (70,000 per year in 1971 dollars)

Well, Howie's a mega-billionaire (over $25 billion in today's dollars?) so what's a few million, here and there, for him.

So I guess keeping a call girl or Sugar Baby, in let's say Singapore or Rio, would be a lot cheaper.

243   New Renter   2014 Sep 3, 12:34am

As early as the 1930s, Hughes displayed signs of mental illness, primarily obsessive-compulsive disorder. Close friends reported that he was obsessed with the size of peas, one of his favorite foods, and used a spCD. He also had terrible pains in his later years due to injuries sustained in several plane crashes through his life:

As early as the 1930s, Hughes displayed signs of mental illness, primarily obsessive-compulecial fork to sort them by size.

...In 1947, after his near-fatal aircraft crash in 1946, Hughes told his aides that he wanted to screen some movies at a film studio near his home. He stayed in the studio's darkened screening room for more than four months, never leaving. He ate only chocolate bars and chicken and drank only milk, later urinating in the empty bottles and containers. He was surrounded by dozens of Kleenex boxes that he continuously stacked and re-arranged. He wrote detailed memos to his aides giving them explicit instructions not to look at him nor speak to him unless spoken to. Throughout this period, Hughes sat fixated in his chair, often naked, continually watching movies. When he finally emerged in the spring of 1948, his hygiene was terrible, he had not bathed nor cut his hair and nails for weeks although this may have been due to allodynia.[28]...

...Hughes insisted on using tissues to pick up objects, so that he could insulate himself from germs. He would also notice dust, stains or other imperfections on people's clothes and demand that they take care of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Hughes

How much of his engineering success was due to his extreme "attention to detail"?

Jesus you guys are funny!

300 HP (same rating as a WWII Panzer TANK!) isn't enough? Standard safety ratings on even the cheapest econobox that make a 1970's Oldsmobile look like a deathtrap isn't enough?

Yes AWD is a fine idea but no, you don't need it.

Real men get by with 100HP or less, live rear axle, and skinny tires.
