There are numerous commentators who tout the nonsense of Money not buying happiness ...

http://iusedtohavehair.com/2014/01/20/money-doesnt-bring-happiness

http://www.studymode.com/essays/Money-Doesn%27t-Bring-Happiness-1622884.html

http://www.forbes.com/2004/09/21/cx_mh_0921happiness.html

I will say one thing ... Corporate America, meaning engaging them, working for them, etc, will definitely NOT buy happiness. Corporate America sucks!

But money, by itself, can most definitely lead to happiness, if you're judicious about how you allocate your resources and know how to enjoy your free time.

Why taking anyone to candlelight dinner or dance if you don't want to plough her? Why waste your time?

Yes, that guy in Saigon

Come on, we all know that the British and American ex-pats in Southeast Asia are cleaning house with the ladies. That isn't news.

The thing is that on our continent, we have women with borderline and histrionic personality disorders, esp once they hit their late 20s, if they didn't have it earlier.

229   HydroCabron   2014 Sep 2, 5:04am

I don't say a word to anyone unless there's a chance of at least a BJ.

My days are pretty quiet.

Seriously, if a woman is handicapped, you know it's not going to happen, so just ignore her.

That's the whole point, I enjoy the food, the atmosphere, the music, etc. That's the difference between being a book smart nerd and a worldly person.

But as for the bo*nk, I'd rather do that Geena Davis look-a-like up in Canada, but then, never have to deal with her again, esp if she's whacked in the head.

So you see, two halves of a coin, I get the general experience of living well and having a great bo*nk without the headaches and weirdness which follow.

231   Reality   2014 Sep 2, 5:06am

Duh, obviously don't waste any time with any women past the late 20's, unless she has a meal ticket from you for having born a child for you.

Yes, but she'll develop Alanis Morrisette-itis, on the way to that age of 29. It's a continuous, not a discrete function. The good women worth dating, are gone and married during or slightly after college.

Just because women wake up beside you after a date and a night of hard bonking, raging and regretting the insulting rape of their bodies, and demanding palimony, sexual harassment lawsuits, and perpetual mad, cringing guilt, doesn't mean they are bad people.

Oh they still have a choice. The two people I showed above might well be a happy couple with lots of kids.

As to what those kids look like I've seen plenty of examples of goofy looking offspring of uberhottie parents (assuming no straying) and some damn fine looking kids from seriously goofy looking parents.

Phenotypes are funny things.

Nah, another Larry Ellison type, big talker who thinks that he's clairvoyant.

But to give Larry some credit, he did envision the whole online streaming world, over 20 years ago. It's just that Oracle's platform mix wasn't what made it happen.

Rin,
Howard Hughes was married 2 or 3 times in his life. The last one lasted nearly a decade and half after dating the girl for a decade. The divorce resulted in the equivalent of about $2mil per year in alimony payment to her (70,000 per year in 1971 dollars)

Well, Howie's a mega-billionaire (over $25 billion in today's dollars?) so what's a few million, here and there, for him.

So I guess keeping a call girl or Sugar Baby, in let's say Singapore or Rio, would be a lot cheaper.

As early as the 1930s, Hughes displayed signs of mental illness, primarily obsessive-compulsive disorder. Close friends reported that he was obsessed with the size of peas, one of his favorite foods, and used a spCD. He also had terrible pains in his later years due to injuries sustained in several plane crashes through his life:

As early as the 1930s, Hughes displayed signs of mental illness, primarily obsessive-compulecial fork to sort them by size.

...In 1947, after his near-fatal aircraft crash in 1946, Hughes told his aides that he wanted to screen some movies at a film studio near his home. He stayed in the studio's darkened screening room for more than four months, never leaving. He ate only chocolate bars and chicken and drank only milk, later urinating in the empty bottles and containers. He was surrounded by dozens of Kleenex boxes that he continuously stacked and re-arranged. He wrote detailed memos to his aides giving them explicit instructions not to look at him nor speak to him unless spoken to. Throughout this period, Hughes sat fixated in his chair, often naked, continually watching movies. When he finally emerged in the spring of 1948, his hygiene was terrible, he had not bathed nor cut his hair and nails for weeks although this may have been due to allodynia.[28]...

...Hughes insisted on using tissues to pick up objects, so that he could insulate himself from germs. He would also notice dust, stains or other imperfections on people's clothes and demand that they take care of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Hughes

How much of his engineering success was due to his extreme "attention to detail"?

I test drove a ZDX. It had 300 HP but it felt a bit slow.

Does the TLX have memory steering? It certainly looks like a very good car.

300 HP is"a bit slow". Peter P says

Luxury cars tend to have more standard safety features and meaningful engine power.

Jesus you guys are funny!

300 HP (same rating as a WWII Panzer TANK!) isn't enough? Standard safety ratings on even the cheapest econobox that make a 1970's Oldsmobile look like a deathtrap isn't enough?

Yes AWD is a fine idea but no, you don't need it.

http://bringatrailer.com/2010/06/05/finnish-fantastic-1963-volvo-p1800-rally-car/

Real men get by with 100HP or less, live rear axle, and skinny tires.

247   Peter P   2014 Sep 3, 2:14am

I don't care too much about horsepower but low-end torque is very important. I need good acceleration in the 30-70 mph range for the comfort factor.

Safety features like adaptive xenon headlights, auto-braking, blind spot monitor, and all-around cameras should be standard by now.

Fine, get a diesel. Or an electric.

Or a diesel-electric if and when they become available:

...it possesses supreme torque when a 2.4-liter diesel kicks in, with an additional 215 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque joining the 70 hp and 148 lb-ft already on tap, courtesy of the electric motor mounted between its rear wheels.

If that's all you care about, get a Hummer. Fuck everyone else on the road - your life is more important than of a Civic driver!

Heft also works aganst your ability to manuver and brake, you know, those things that keep you out of the collision in the first place.

Harsh? yes, but the arms race of bigger cars make everyone else LESS safe, not more.

Once self driving cars become common none of this will matter anyway. All the car will need is enough power to hit 80MPH with the A/C cranked, e.g. a 0.8L 50-40HP turbodiesel-electric drivetrain.

Finding and marrying a good woman is a singular achievement after a certain age. It takes time and persistence to sort through the dross of average or below average females. Here are some things on my list of must-haves:
1)intelligence: this is an inheritable quality, and I wanted smart kids. Also dumb or even average int women bored me outside the bedroom.
2)educated: if she's not, she will rely on you for a meal ticket for life.
3)motivated/self driven: lazy women need not apply. This is also an inheritable quality, and I didn't want lazy or unmotivated children.
4)moral: overly selfish or malicious women are a pox on mankind. I wanted someone who'd be reliable, tell the truth, and make correct choices.
5)sense of humor intact: without this, the rest of those qualities make their personality too brittle to sustain the hard knocks life will dish out.
6) athletic: caring for ones health and body is a basic tenet of mental health. Who wants to be with the woman who gets married and lets herself go?
7)at least pretty. Beauty is also often inherited. And I like pretty girls.

I guess I got lucky. We've been married now almost ten years, and she's way better than just pretty.

Can't wait for self-driving cars. I hate driving.

BTW, with automation, cars can form trains, which should help overcoming aerodynamic resistance. We may see speeds faster than 80 mph.

Perhaps each unit can even draw electricity from some third-rail along selected trunk routes.

1. Intelligence is an arbitrary measure designed by "intelligent" people to make themselves feel better. Wisdom is more desirable.

2. Over-educated people are unbearable. A good balance of knowledge and epistemic humility is important.

3. Motivation is a good thing to have. I agree.

4. Morality is an arbitrary measure designed by "moral" people to make themselves feel better. A good understanding of meta-ethics is more useful.

5. A good sense of humor is the best quality a woman can possess. It is a true sign of "intelligence."

6. Health and fitness? Of course. When the future self-driving car has only 40 hp, a fat ass will render the primary mode of transportation useless.

7. Yes, an eye-candy is better than an eye-sore. :-)

I've never been to NYC, but I have to imagine the women there are not representative of the temperament of the average woman. Social climbers and grasping aging beauty queens alongside selfish careerists.
On the other hand, all the Canadian women I've known have seemed like real catches, well balanced and caring, sense of humor. Maybe you're onto something with your forays North of the border. Im sure their call girls are great, but maybe you could try meeting women there who aren't prostitutes?

NYC may be the nerve center, ala 'Sex In The City' mecca, but it's kinda an all around phenomena in the northeast corridor. And the guys who're cued in, will marry the good ones, meaning ones who are sane and not into *bad boys*, long before they become toxic avengers.

Quigley says

Yes, this is a possibility, however, I'd ended up with an Alanis Morrisette type, instead. Since esc*rting is legal, my time is better spent simply enjoying an '8' than in dating a '5', looking for Ms Right.

260   Shaman   2014 Sep 3, 12:07pm

I'm not sure why you'd waste time chasing a 5? Unless she was just the most awesome person ever. I've actually met that girl, and she was happily married. She's still the most sparkling personality I know. But a five, no more.
It's been a while, but I found the hotter chicks to be easier to approach. Yah they get hit on a lot, but it's mostly by guys who aren't what they are looking for. I'm always amazed at how many 8-9 guys are with 4-5 girls. I'd say it's somewhere between lack of confidence and unwillingness to get out there and take risks. Faint heart never won fair lady...

261   Rin   2014 Sep 3, 12:49pm

Here's the thing, after a certain age, many of the women, regardless of the 5 to 8 scale (whatever that is), are damaged goods and not worth getting involved with. The chances are, however, that a 5 or 6, will be willing to at least play 'normal', until the relationship crumbles.

Those esc*rts I'd listed, are basically all 8s or above. And thus, I'm not really concerned so much about whether or not Geena Davis is hotter than Jennifer Connelly or Tia Carrerre vs Kelly Hu. The point is that I'm a satisfied customer with a happy experience.

Something like a BMW 760Li (~5000 lb curb weight, 550 lb/ft torque) will have the right balance of active and passive safety. They just need to something less luxury and more affordable.
