#chinainvestmentsmexico When one thinks of Mexico, one thinks of tourism, beer, tequila production, and sadly, illegal drugs. Few people know an amazing fact, Mexico has a car manufacturing industry that is number seven in the world. Now the Financial Times of London published an amazing article. Three Chinese electric car companies are looking to set up manufacturing plants in Mexico as follows:
MG with a projected capital investment between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.
BYD with an initial investment of "hundreds of millions of dollars"
Chery with undisclosed capital investment plans
Another major Chinese battery manufacturer announced plans for a staggering $12 billion for a battery plant in Mexico. All these investments are great news for the Mexican economy. Mexico is also the largest trading partner of the U.S. in the world. US government officials are quite concerned about this major Chinese investment so close to the U.S. Under certain circumstances, all the electric vehicles produced by Chinese car companies in Mexico could qualify for US tax credits to purchasers of these vehicles.
I love competition. This will make everyone work harder and put out better products at lower cost.

Is this news??? A country with cheap labor next to the largest GDP country can make cars for them? Not ship them across the Oceans? Who would have thunk?

The reason they are making Toyotas in Mexico is because of NAFTA; this gives another unfair advantage to foreign car companies which export to the USA.

Chinese labor is expensive nowadays. Mexicans in contrast are twice as productive but cost 1/3 less, in general.

Plus the other advantages you mention and the article does.

Remember that debate between Ross Perot and Al Gore over NAFTA? Well, looks like they were both right. We are going to sell a shitload to Mexican consumers over the next 30 years.

The rest of the world is flooded with cheap Chinese EVs. Looks like we'll be getting them soon, too. That's gonna hurt all US EV manufacturers...except perhaps Tesla's PR about achieving super levels of automation over the years are true.

Not saying you're saying this, but I've never gotten the negative towards Mexicans. I've never had a bad time in Mexico. Put this way, do you go to the West side of Chicago to experience Chicago? Fuck no. Mexico is a great country for what it is in my opinion. Don't go to the ghetto and you'll be fine.

I also worked in RE in the 2nd biggest Mexican market in Chicago. Maybe I'm biased. Most are good people. Just saw my wife's cousins wife over the weekend. Mexican born. Good family. Her parents come to holidays. Maybe they're yuppie Mexicans (is it Muppie if I recall) but solid people.

Venezuela needs to calm its ponies. This hemisphere can dominate the world for a century no problem if we keep our shit together. Mexico is a big part of that. Europe and Asia are fucked in my opinion. Australia will continue to Australia. But the rest of the Eastern Hemisphere I think is going to eat shit for the rest of our lifetimes. Probably another world war. Probably the only thing they're good at.

Mexico is a failed narco state and shithole. US money going to Mexico for products in lieu of China is a huge win and can only make things better in Mexico.

Only one cartel (Sinaloa?) Is blowing it out of proportion.

What most Americans do not know is that the crime in Mexico is vast and goes far beyond selling dope and sneaking illegals into the USA.

In several states the government is not in control but the narcos are.

They extort businesses, take farms by force or kill the owners, and generally fuck things up in Mexico on a gigantic scale.

The term for extortion of a business is "piso"; gangsters show up to your business and tell you what you must pay them every month.

People either pay, shut their business, or are killed.

I imagine none of the dear readers have actually met any Mexicans who have had to abandon their business and flee their town?
Probably also have not known a farmer who was extorted and forced to pay narcos a portion of his production every month?

"Most Mexicans are good people." This is false.
Most Mexicans have polite speech built into the language; deep down most (not all) Mexicans are dishonest, particularly concerning money matters.
I have an old Mexican friend who went to LA long ago and got Amnesty when Reagan was president.
Down here he was talking to his family as a group about living in the USA:
"In the US, 80% of people are good, while in Mexico 80% of people are bad."
Nobody argued with him because they experience it every day.

The contrast is sometimes alarming; your friends are very nice and loyal, while others are out to get you.
There is generally no or little punishment for civil fraud and justice is so slow it's practically non-existent, and everyone knows it.
