It's tied to being used only on phones. That's stupid. No computer interface means no interface to me.

I wonder if there is a way to emulate a phone on a desktop for the purposes of running phone apps.

You can, but it's awful. I've done it but it's pretty awful. It expects input from a touch screen, and you basically have to simulate that with a mouse. I did it half heartedly for a bit when Skype was taken away from Linux but it rapidly became unusable anyhow.
