I am tolerant of folks in the neighborhood setting off their illegal fireworks because when I was a kid, all the kids in the neighborhood including me had one great big boomfest. It wasn't just July 4th. It was "July 4th season".

Nowadays I make sure I'm home every July 4th to snuff out any fires that may occur in the yard, or the gutters. from a stray bottle rocket. Till recently, also at home to reassure my stressed out animal companions (the last of those passed away recently).

While I'm tolerant because of remembering the joy from my youth, I would also welcome a strong-fisted crackdown because of the stress it causes to animals.

It's unbelievable how many Communists there were in the 30s-50s, many on the NKVD payroll directly. John Wayne was almost assassinated. Donovan kissed NKVD feet and they knew everything. My dog is perfectly chill around gunfire, fireworks and other loud sounds. My previous dogs were too. Early socialization is the key. Harder to do with a grown-up rescue dog, I would imagine, but this is an experience I don't have - all my dogs were acquired as 1-2 month old pups.

Had a couple of Karen's post on neighborhood site while fireworks where going off. The complaining just made it that much funnier.

We used to pop cap guns when the hunting puppies were eating. Associating gun noises with food and other good things.

I think dogs really key in on their keepers emotions. When you ask somebody, "Is your dog friendly?", the answer will tell you a lot more about the keeper than the dog.

Decades ago I rescued a young lab who couldn't care less about firecracker/fireworks noise till he got older, like around 12 or so. Then he got terrified.

As it would happen, I have a relative's middle aged Pit Bull staying with me for a while. She was also chill about the fireworks. Every dog is different.

The Pit Bull ought to get a reward for her behavior last night. She was key in us coming to the aid of a young lady we encountered on the street during our evening walk who was in serious need of public safety / law enforcement / medical EMT-type response. The dog was key in keeping this young lady calm till the responders arrived to do their jobs.

I learned a lot from that experience, especially a tremendous appreciation for the professionalism of the civil servants involved.

I had a dog that was absolutely terrified of firecrackers and noise and such. Poor thing would crawl into my arms and just shake and he wasn't a small dog, about 50 lbs. Although I had a LOT of sympathy for him, I wouldn't even think of having a ban on the noise. He lived through it, he was entirely safe, nothing was going to happen to him but I did feel badly for him - but it was his problem. I've had other dogs, were they were entirely oblivious to the noise.

It's not that expensive in California. I have a friend that gets edibles sometimes. It was like $30 for a tin of like 30 - and that little chocolate candy, it's PLENTY for me. For a dog.. I'd have to cut it up into a quarter the size.

Look, just let them crawl into your lap on the couch, and put on a movie while you comfort them. They'll be, of course, fine, and really, it's rather enjoyable to be needed for comfort for a few hours.

The dog I had was absolutely terrified. He'd be shaking and burying his head into me, and all he wanted was comfort. All I had to do was pet him for a few hours, and frankly, I enjoyed it entirely. He was a big baby about it all, but he got all the attention I could give. It's enjoyable and sweet, cute and endearing.

Of course! That's the whole damned point of having a pet! The whole entire point is to give them a happy life and I enjoyed doing that.

Some people definitely should not have fireworks:

Telling people don't celebrate July 4th because their dog can't deal. Is like chastising people walking down the street, because their dog goes ape shit and wont stop barking. Probably people who trained their dog with a quarter in a Pringles can, for shitting on the rug, instead of a stern slap on the rump with a rolled up paper, and a strong reprimand.

My Dog runs up to the area where the fireworks are being lit, then runs back with everyone else. And is the first one back at the platform after it goes off.
At least that's how he was on his first July 4th, we'll see shortly if he still fancies them as a 2 year old dog..
