I have yet to hear any moderately joyful Finnish music

Scandinavian music in general seems like a dysphoric, Baltic hebephrenia. I have learned to like it a bit more for some reason, it must all be related to gray skies and long, harsh winters.
The Finns do have something called 'Finnish Forest Funk' which is a little more lively. They have some YouTube vids of them wagging their bottoms to it. My wife and I have watched a few Finnish detective shows on Netflix to escape the woke pablum. They are pretty good. Their SWAT teams look absolutely formidable and ferocious. They also have that love hate thing with Russia, but the shows seem to indicate that the roads between St. Petersburg have mostly token border crossings.

The facial expressions go right along with the traditional music - my mother was from Finland. Nice people more or less but the music and such is hard to deal with.

I have yet to hear any moderately joyful Finnish music - my Mother loved slavic music - anything but the creations from her homeland.

Finns are OCD as a nation, and cheerfulness is rare there - I've visited a couple of times. They need to drink heavily in order to be able to communicate with other humans.
The OCD part means that if they decide to do something, it is done correctly and efficiently (like killing Russians in 1939-40).

About music, Säkkijärven polkka is semi-cheerful in music but not lyrics and has interesting historic connotations, Another one of their folk songs is Ievan Polkka (Lumberjack version is fully).

And lets not forget the worst music video in history of mankind...Armi & Danny - I Wanna Love You Tender - they are also Finnish.

I always like the Lockhorns, it was the only Comic my Dad would read in "the Funny Papers" before handing it off to the one of us kids.
I can't believe that as of 2021 the cartoon is still going. The guy must be in his 90's. Or at least his cartoons even back then seemed to be of middle aged content.
That was over 45 years ago.

Religion has many good aspects: belonging, meaning, a set of ethical rules, most of which are good.

To completely throw out religion is misguided imho. It's throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Karl Marx. And what where the biggest atrocities committed in the name of Marxism?

Secular Marxist movements managed to kill more human beings in 50 years then all "religion" combined over 2,000 years.

This is a bit disingenuous because religion kept the population uneducated and small and in poverty for nearly 2,000 years after Rome fell. Once we were free of that, we went through very rapid development. The biggest discovery really was natural gas and oil deposits and our population exploded.

It was in this context that so many people could now suddenly be killed.

Marmaduke was also on my must read list - the cartoons were all too familiar with the psychotic German Shepherd we had when I was growing up.

Dogs are pretty awesome. Everything they do that makes you goddamned furious at the time, you will laugh about in time.

One time, one of my dogs went after a skunk, and my friend and I spent the next 3 hours avoiding people. It was late, so I slipped into work to quickly and briefly researched "olfactory overload" and how to remove the scent.

I wanted to kill that dog at the time.

What happens with an extremely strong odor is eventually, you can't smell it no matter what it is. Turned out the dog got the brunt of it, and we weren't hit. But you literally don't know if you stink after a point.

Same dog dragged me down an embankment, I fell down about 20 feet through pine needles, I missed the trees luckily. One dog ate an entire box of sugar and had the worst diarrhea ever. Once another dog started lapping beer out of my glass at a bar, and a patron laughed at my misfortune, she stopped laughing went I just downed the rest of the beer :)

I liked
Andy Kapp
Family Circus
Hagar the Horrible
The Wizard of Id(but only when the topic was the executioner, I found the short King boring)
Blondie
The Far Side
Lockhorns
Marmaduke
Henry
Beatle Bailey
Nancy
Ziggy
Hi and Lois
Marvin
Snuffy Smith
B.C.
Pluggers (could be cited for creating the Can do attitude and sprit of the Gen X generation)
and that was about it, might have been a few others.
I didn't care for the adult ones then and I don't now either.

I didn't like
Sir Valiant
Shoe (The political birds at a bar, that looked like Tip O'Neil and Ted Kennedy)
Bloom Country
Doonsburry
Tank McManara

Didn't care for
Cathy
Heathcliff
Garfield
Richie Rich

These are all pre Calvin and Hobs, or Dilbert or Life In Hell(precursor to The Simpsons)

Although the boomers are vastly superior to the Millennials, for the simple reason most of them admit when they fucked up and don't feel entitled to free shit because of their fee-fees.

The GenX movie poster is "Red Dawn" most of us were well into our 20's when Labyrinth came out, and it was more of a kids movie, than something to appealed to the over 16 crowd.

The boomers run the nation right now. I think they are, generally, the worst generation this nation has ever seen, and by far the most entitiled.

They have no accomplishments at all. What did they do? When the civil rights act passed, the oldest boomer was 18. When the US went to the moon in 1969, the oldest boomer was was 23. The Silent Generation did all that shit.

Generation X did the Internet revolution. We made all the protocols, we did all the encryption, and we're failing by the way. We're allowing the boomers to fuck this all up.

The boomer generation has kept us in 20 years of endless, stupid fucking war. That's their accomplishment.

What did the boomers do that was good? They protested the Vietnam war, and have driven us into war after war after war once they got into power. First Generation X, then Y, now the motherfuckers want to do WWIII. I'm friendly with a few boomers here, but in general, I think their generation was awful. They've done more damage to this nation than any other.

I'm not saying this out of hate, I'm stating it as a fact. If I'm wrong, correct me. The Silent Generation did all the heavy fucking lifting of technology and civil rights - Generation X did all the heavy fucking lifting of making this communication system viable and we're not done yet. We really did revolutionize the world, but we've been fucked in many ways. I never foresaw AMERICAN corporations violating the 1st amendment 15 years ago. We have plenty of traitors in our generation, and a few in Generation Y - Fuckerberg is an incredible traitor for example. We have fucking migrant traitors running Google now, assholes that should have never been allowed into this nation. People that don't even understand what being American is, invaders.

Rich, I'm speaking of Joe Sixpack Boomer, not the early-mid 1940s born Gerontocracy in Politics and Business such as Pelosi, Biden, etc.

Sixpack Boomers, esp. the evangelical ones, have been holding back the Radical Wave for decades or it would have began in the 1990s. They remember pre Radical America before the late 60s.
4538   Tenpoundbass   2022 Jun 1, 9:23am

People bitching about the Boomers is grossly misguided.

There are probably 1 out of every 10,000 boomers even capable or interested of influencing, either intentionally or accidentally, the outcome of politics, economy or social change.
Where as 7500 out of every 10000 Millennials are actively and intentionally trying to forge the world into their liking, whims and image.

I think when they were of age, 18 to into their 30's their collective ideology did a lot to change the world. In many ways more successful than what the millennials are trying to do now.
The Boomers meddled with forces they probably shouldn't have fucked with. They tore open Pandora's box that allowed the forces that has created the selfish, petty, mediocre, nontalented, entitled society that we became. Their freedom that was handed to them by their Greatest Generation and Silent Generation parents. They used it to empower themselves to make great social strides and some good and bad changes. Their biggest sin, was they got power hungry, and they became the champion of marginalized fringe people with self imposed limitations imposed on themselves, but enforced by society rules. Even to the point they started defending the worst of humanity, when they ran out of legitimate issues. But by time it got there, most Boomers started having kids and didn't involve themselves with polices and the news. Most became pretty defeatist about life and struggles in general. "Things will never change and there's nothing you can do about it" mentality.

While at the same time GenX grew up to be self starting, self sufficient, positive thinkers. But here's the kick in the pants, it was the Boomers now into their late 30's and middle age, that was writing all of the music, movies and art, that helped forge our view on the world. They even wrote our school curriculum which was pretty positive IMO.
Not to rest on their laurels at the same time, they were raising their kids(Millennials) to get participation trophies, don't do a damn thing for themselves, blame others for their failures. And when you can't get your way become litigious and place burden on the innocent to defend themselves from your attacks.
It's now the Millennials that are creating the policies that everyone collectively loathes the Boomers for. Yes there is still that small percent of Boomers that still sits on top with the big long stick stirring the whole shit pot.

But not the collective Boomers, they are as screwed as everyone else is. My hope is the world will be a better place when the Millennials ever grow up, that's a big if.
The Boomers did raise them to be sniveling whinny lot, that gets angry when they don't get their way, with little effort to change it.

I can't help but feel that if the Boomers were actually capable of running their own affairs, they were elected to conduct. Then the world would be a better place.
The Nation is being ran by Millennial staffers, that write up 800 pages Boomers don't take the time to read. Even if they did read it, couldn't articulate what is in it.
