I would recommend D.W. Griffith's Intolerance.
It's an epic silent film released in 1916. Aside from having truly grandiose sets like in the above picture, it illustrates the effects of arrogance and intolerance through four different periods (Babylon, Christ, France and crotchey old women in America). It's over three hours long but it really demonstrates how concerned people have been about issues we face today. Might be considered a little "boring" to modern tastes though.
The Island (fake contamination scare/sci fi future with cloning)
"Lifeforce" of course, for the best sci fi nekkid garbanzo vampire.

When my wife and I watched this, she experienced the closest thing to The Simpsons "Strange feelings stirring in Duffman." That movie is over the top fucked up.
I should also mention another Cronenberg flick: Crash
I recently saw 2 great movies from Norway.
And HBO's Rome. Just watch the first season. The second one isn't bad but not nearly as good as the first. A LOT of parallels with our current politics can be seen in both Yes, Minister and Rome.
Thank you, I appreciate any effort.
