$3 to $4, peak 2006 - peak 2011 prices is only about a 30% increase. To double in Price since Obama entered office, we'd have to see $6.00 average pump prices right now.

This would be BS too, since gas prices are driven by many factors, and US consumption has remained flat since 2009 yet prices have crept up.

The reason why prices are higher now since Jan 2009, aside from seasonal effects (low prices in January and higher prices during summer) is:

the rising yuan rate (as the yuan appreciates against the dollar they will be buying much more oil -- currently they are consuming 10% of global supply, this will rise to 20%+ later this century), global supply (Libya in civil war isn't helping anything), demand (Japan is burning diesel now to replace its lost nuclear reactors), and yes, dollar depreciation due to Bernanke's printing.

But money supply didn't start growing in 2009 -- it's been growing fast for a very long time. Here's MZM vs gasoline prices:

One side-effect of a weaker dollar -- which we need against at least the yuan -- is in fact higher gasoline costs. This is why I am not expecting any real wage gains or a wage-price spiral to appear this decade.

China is buying half the oil we are (9 mbpd). If and when the yuan moves from 6.5 to 3 they will be able to double their oil buying, if only the market could supply it. Of course it can't, so their consumption is going to have to come out of ours.

If I were the President, I'd attempt to put gas taxes in place sufficient to pay for all our military adventures in the Middle East. That would be around $3/gallon BTW.
