Vanguard has a technical problem with its website; it doesn't work with browsers sometimes.
1. A couple of years ago using Firefox the website made errors; one almost cost me some money. I mentioned it in a phone call and the representative said "Yeah, Firefox isn't working well." Using Chrome on my Linux laptop solved the problem.
2. Just now I was using a MacBook and Safari; I have the MacBook using the local Mexico WiFi, evidently Vanguard.com disliked my VPN. This time the Vanguard Website was totally fucked up using Safari.
What the fuck? I'm supposed to do everything online with them, how can I?
I ended up doing the transaction on my phone with their app, but it's unsatisfactory to me.
@clambo I agree with you, and can tell you some causes from the inside because I used to work on such things.
Lots of companies test only on the latest version of Chrome, because that's what their developers have on their work-issued laptops. It costs more money to test on more browsers.
A related problem is that developers always want to use the latest cool features of javascript and CSS, because they're curious, and because getting familiar with those features is something they can put on their resume. So the developers are looking out for themselves and not for customers.
It's really a failure of technical management. What they should be doing is making sure that their sites at least work with plain html and javascript entirely disabled. As much as I dislike Wikipedia for betraying its promise of being open and instead censoring all wrongthink, they do that one thing right. The site works fine with javascript disabled. Maybe some things take more steps, but it works.
I try to do the same with patrick.net. I think the only thing that doesn't work right with javascript off is the "like" link on a comment. I should fix that.

Prince Harry complains again.
