There's nothing wrong with starting out as a customer rep. People skills is what you don't learn in college. She should take the job and keep looking for new opportunities. That's what everyone did back then as well. Back then when I was already programming in assembly for fun as a teenager I did simple data entry jobs (later on the side) or excel sheets to make some money into my early 20s. Nothing wrong with that. Learned a lot about financials and interest rates at one Co. She is entitled and yes at the same time she was sold a bunch of shit "degrees". Getting back to this kid - she was sold a fake bill of goods. She's got a master's degree of... what? No idea, but she's realizing it's not useful for anything. You know what a useless masters is? Physics. Mathematician, even PhD.. You can TEACH in this area, maybe, but you better have some ability to apply it.

When I worked at TRW Aerospace in the late 90s there was a janitor making about 85k+, he became a tech a little bit later when I met him but I was surprised how much he made doing that. He did have to have security clearance to be janitor there.

Man it was 15 years ago, but it's not a secret. Look up the Bart janjtor who made 270k + 36k benefits in one year by working hard and taking advantage of the overtime rules. Their base is not spectacular, but at least 60k now. However with a little overtime here and there they get over 100k easily. Benefits are good. Why do you have a hard time believing it? It's hard to find people for manual labor these days. Look at the SF city cleanup workers who refuse having to exit their street sweeper cars. Zero manual labor. Most garbage men don't leave their trucks anymore either, if your can is a bit too far on the sidewalk or toppled over by the wind, it's fuck you! You still pay but fuck you! If some of your cardboard gets stuck inside the can, it's fuck you! They shake it gently a few times with the automated gripper and if nothing comes out it's fuck you! Their salary is way above 100k. We got a notice once with a warning to be fined because the 2 cans weren't 2 feet apart, not specifying if they were too close or two far away. Am I supposed to come out with a ruler each time so they never have to exit their trucks? If you are abled bodied, willing and have some grit, go into manual labor. You'll be a Rockstar going the extra inch!

Everybody that gets sold a worthless degree finds out sooner or later that it is worthless. My daughter in her senior year was in a class taught by some discouraged TA who spent the whole class telling them all what the degrees they were going to get were worth in the job market. It was news to virtually all of them. There was much upset and confusion in that classroom including my daughter. She then did what this kid should do and made herself useful, and then indispensable, to her employers and did really well for herself.

Depends on the STEM field. A degree in science won't get your very far, chemists for example starting out, I don't know who would employ them. Geologist though, I know they are needed.

I think learning abstract concepts like algebra in 8th grade help me to become a better problem solver. If you can learn calculus, then its very easy to understand the wiring of a house or even a ship.

But I also took a shop class every semester of high school.

We had 6 classes (50 minutes each) and 4 classes were math, english, science and social studies with the 2 others being electives so my 1 elective was always shop class.

My senior year social studies was applied economics which was worthwhile since they taught us the stock market and also about industrial economics such as running a factory.
