What if Adolf Hitler died at the end of 1939 during World War II?
He would have been succeeded by Erwin Bumke, President of the Supreme Court, as President and Chancellor since the Office of Vice-Chancellor was vacant.

Rudolf Hess was deputy PARTY LEADER, a fact most people miss.

Göring wasn’t designated as successor until 1941.

Now, the Nazis wanted to do everything by the book, shoving Bumke to the side would have been unthinkable.

Bumle, however, would have been influenced by Göring, Goebbels, and Himmler with
Göring carrying the most weight (pun intended).

Göring would have tried to make peace with the Allies, most likely by offering to give Poland back its independence. This would have put Britain and France on a collision course with Stalin who had grabbed the other half of Poland.

This would have been an offer the Allies and Poland couldn’t have refused unless they wanted war with the Soviet Union.

The now weakened Poland would have had to rely on Germany for protection against the Soviet Union.

Göring had always viewed good relations with Poland as an essential step towards an invasion of the Soviet Union. This had always been Hitler's idea as well until 1938 which is why Hitler had concluded a treaty with Poland in 1934. Poland’s strong man Jozef Beck had prevented this planned alliance against the Soviets.

With Beck out of the way, a German-Polish alliance would most likely have become a reality.

This would have ended the war with Britain and France and would have made Stalin look really bad in the eyes of the Allies.

Whether Göring would have pressed for an invasion of the Soviet Union (and when) is not clear.

I knew the poster of this thread half way through reading the title. I did not look first.

Whataboutisms of his nature is purely deflection and projection and indicative of the Fascist dictators that the left has become.
The sprit of Hitler is alive and well in the 2023 Democrat party as a whole body, of Fascist embracing rhetoric and practice.
So there you go! Glad I could help you with your ponderance.

You're selling Hitler's inner circle short if you believe that they were just hapless tagalong's of Hitler's.

A man doe not do what he did without a fully supportive inner circle. The crime was how the Allies went after lowly soldiers who had no choice or say in the matter. Like employees at Walmart that can only Parrot the corporate's policy about Masks, when you challenge them for demanding you put on a mask. Like the Walmart employees those SS troops did not want to get fired by the Higher Ups. You only got fired once and done, if you were part of that regime.

Bormann was still cashing checks in the 1960's. Hitler was exfiltrated by Jesuits and U boat to South America. Mengele was ratlined and his name was changed to continue his work for the CIA (SS reconfigured by Alan Dulles) in the United States. Germany was working on too much exotic technology to let it go to 'waste'. The Third Reich never surrendered, only the military.

The Great Depression would have continued through the 1940's. The isolationist coalition in the US would have prevented involvement in Europe and Asia, so that Japan would have eventually realized their goal of the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere." Soviet Russia would have undermined most of Europe. Churchill would have been tried and convicted for his incompetence in the Gallipoli Campaign in WWI.

The Banksters would have undone FDR in coalition with the republicans. The USA would be a regional power dominating the Americas, but constantly on the defensive from Soviet/Communist incursions.

Most importantly, the A- and H-Bomb would have never been built by the US. Maybe it might have been built by the Japanese or the Germans in another 10-15 years.

That is Ohomenbot's fever dream.

What would really have happened?

1) We would have avoided over a dozen major and minor wars and related expenses.
2) The US would perhaps have retained the gold standard and sound money, fueling multigenerational organic growth and development.
3) Rockets and the space age would be completely private - it would take much longer, but be more sustainable.
4) Nuclear power would become more widespread because it would not be linked to nuclear weapons. Fermi demonstrated the chain reaction in the 1930's. EDIT: no it was 1942, so maybe no nuclear power.
5) We would still be using pen and paper - computers would be more primitive, but we wouldn't have the global cybersurveillance state.
6) No globohomo.

I could go on, but the US would have been a much simpler and possibly better place than it is today if FDR hadn't swallowed Churchill's Kool-Aid (which also would not have been developed) and gone all-in on war.

If Hitler had died at the end of 1939:

1. Poland was already non-existent before he died: Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, USSR invaded on September 17th (one day after cease-fire on the Kalkin Gol battle front between USSR vs. Japan in the eastern part of Siberia/Mongolia), so Polish high command quickly came to the conclusion that even retaining a Romanian bridgehead would be infeasible and ordered all units to retreat to Romania (and get disarmed). All hostilities ceased on October 6th, 1939; i.e. more than 2.5 months before Hitler' hypothetical death at the end of the year.

2. Hitler dying at the end of 1939 would have prevented the adoption of the Manstein Plan (after Feb 1940), which was objected to by almost the entire German Army establishment but loved by Hitler. So German invasion of Western Europe would have come down along the coast similar to Schlieffen Plan during WW1 (instead of going through the woods of Luxemburg), running smack into the French Armor divisions and British Expeditionary Force. The result is likely a stalemate on the Western Front, unless the powers behind the curtain deliberately tell the French to give up and panic in front of Stuka's.

3. A stalemate on the Western Front would lead to Allied bombing of Baku oil field in the USSR from bases in Lebanon and Syria. Large British and French bomber formations were already moved there during the Winter War between the USSR and Finland. Before the soviets held onto the Battle of Moscow in 1941 (and Stalingrad the following winter), the consensus in the West was that the USSR was pathetically weak and ready to keel over under any external pressure. So if there is a stalemate on the Western Front, while soviets continue to supply Germany with oil, bombing Baku would be considered an effective way of attacking the soft under-belly of the Germany-USSR alliance; and that's precisely why the British and French were moving bomber formations to Lebanon an Syria after the start of Winter War in Finland (January 1940). Italy would not have joined the war yet, as France was not yet defeated.

4. In that case, it would be a war of UK+France (and their various dominions and colonies) vs. Germany and the USSR. Political pressure and financial interests would have the US supply weapons and making loans to UK+France, eventually leading to the US invading Siberia along with Japan (which would not have invaded French and British colonies as they were not weak yet), possibly getting their asses kicked in the frozen tundra.

5. How long an alliance Nazi Germany and the USSR could maintain would be anyone's guess, especially given the man who promised an eventual German invasion of the USSR for living-space was already dead in this scenario. If they manage to maintain alliance, then Turkey and Iran (oil fields), plus Saudi oil fields would flip to the two continental powers, as the 3 leading naval powers on the allied side (in this scenario, US, UK and Japan on the same side) would only be able to fight them (Germany and USSR) on land. OTOH, the value of Iranian oil fields to the land powers might be limited as the naval powers would try to bomb the fields out of existence using battleships and carriers. Pretty sure oil exploration under UK and US tech companies had that eventuality in mind and limited exploration to the coast before Iranian independence. Russians might mine the Straight of Hormuz, and Germans might send subs to the area.

Soviets were allies and collaborators of Nazis in 1939. Which, by their own logic, makes them forever Nazis.

In the real history time line, the diplomatic relationship between the USSR and Germany was Mutual Non-Aggression Pact, not an alliance. In the hypothetical time line, if Hitler died at the end of 1939, then not adopting Manstein Plan leading to stalemate on the Western Front, and Brits+French bombing Baku, then the USSR and Germany may indeed form an alliance.

Hitler didn't personally recruit and train Hitler's youth. Hitler was a product of his time, the times were not the result of Hitler.
Mussolini is what happens when one man goes it alone. Half the country revolted and formed a resistance against him. Hitler had no resistance.

If Hitler had not ruled Germany before WW2 somebody of similar ideology would have come to power.

Hitler was the brand name, Nazi-ism was the game.
