Not to defend the new government that replaced the deposed US puppets - the Iran / Iraq war was probably started by the United States as an attempt to recapture Iran. When Iraq failed to do this, the US decided to set their sights on Iraq and Hussein. It's HIGHLY likely the US started that stupid fucking war. They certainly funded it.

Mosaddegh was doing a good job of increasing the living standard of many, and he went too far. He wanted to nationalize Aramco's oil fields, was negotiating with the British to do it, while the British themselves were nationalizing oil interests. The British could have just said "no, this will never happen", but instead, they baited him and led him along, with false negotiations, and made a deal with the CIA to overthrow him. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was installed to be a SERVANT of the United States and the British, and I bet he improved living standards - that was hard NOT to do in the 1950's with all this new technology.
But there was a faction that resisted it, lunatics that did. This was the Iranian Revolution, that didn't fear torture and murder by SAVAK. All the pro-democracy people gave up, but the nutcases didn't. So, once it was proved religious LUNATICS could overthrow a foreign power that model was copied everywhere, and that was the birth of "Islamic terrorism".
