The pipelines suffered at least three major leaks, due to suspected sabotage.

Blasts detected near Nord Stream pipelines amid leak – Swedish seismologists

Scientists in Denmark and Sweden registered underwater explosions near the Nord Stream pipelines on Monday, when several major leaks were reported. Sabotage is now suspected as a key reason for the damage.

“There is no doubt that these were explosions,” seismologist Bjorn Lund with Sweden’s National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT on Tuesday.

The Danish military released aerial footage of the leaks, showing large spots and visible bubbling in the water. Nord Stream 1 suffered two leaks northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, while Nord Stream 2 was damaged south of Dueodde, a beach located at the island’s southernmost tip, the military noted.

Earlier in the day, Moscow said it has been looking into the reasons behind the leaks, suggesting the pipelines were targeted in an act of sabotage. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that currently “no option can be ruled out” on the causes of the incident.

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline was completed in 2011. Construction work on Nord Stream 2 began in 2018, and suffered numerous delays due to political pressure and sanctions from the US. The pipeline was finished and pressurized in September 2021, but never actually got online.

Two days before the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the German government put its certification on indefinite hold, and has repeatedly rejected any suggestions, both domestic and from Moscow, to open the pipeline.

Pretty reasonable argument suggesting that the pipeline explosion was an accident due to Russia's legendary incompetence.

- Gas kept in the pipe for months and months which could form hydrate crystals that could cause an explosion while Russia tried to drain the pipe.
- 2 explosions 17 hours apart relatively close together? What type of attack is that knowing that Russia would have had vessels at the site within short order?
- Russia is not making a big fuss blaming Ukraine or screaming at the UN about it.

The benefit of this is that now Germany and other European countries will hate the USA more as it hurts Germany, et al the most.

Russia was already reducing natural gas supply to Europe back in August as this headline reads "Nord Stream 1: Russia switches off gas pipeline citing maintenance"

Its a political war as much, and creating a rift between Germany and the USA is achieved by making Germans pay a lot more for natural gas imported from the USA.

Baltic Pipe will carry gas from Norway to Poland via Denmark. The maximum capacity is only 10 billion cubic meters, which happens to be ten times less than the volume supplied by NS and NS2. So Baltic Pipe may be enough for Poland, but carries no value for other EU customers.

Good points. The one thing I've heard over and over from the people who seem the most objective, is it's really hard to tell what's going on over there. What's true and what are lies. So the most any of us should say is war is wrong, and we support whoever is for peace. Putin is no less or more evil than he's always been. Ukraine is no less or more corrupt than it always was, and governments still only love power, NOT people.

If we don't know shit, then we shouldn't be picking sides.

I just noticed that Anthony Blinken is Jewish too. I do think that the nurturing of grievances is central to Judaism, so maybe there's something to the idea that US foreign policy is partly driven by that.

At the Passover Seder there is the line "In all ages do men rise up against us." The sense of being beleaguered and needing to rely on each other is the glue which keeps Jews together. So in a sense, Judaism requires anti-semitism to survive.

It's a kind of algorithmic feedback loop.

To be fair, it's not just posing. Jews actually do get massacred with historic regularity.

And it's not unique to Jews. The same feedback loop happens with other cultures, particularly all of the Christian minorities of the Middle East: Coptic, Armenian, Syraic, Chaldean. They tend to be richer than their neighbors and of course they refuse to convert to Islam, so this also makes them targets of massacres by Muslims.

And the Chinese in Malaysia have a similar dynamic. Small wealthy mercantile class that does not want the majority culture men to marry their daughters.

And the Indians in Uganda.

So the feedback loop is something like this:

wealth is generated by cooperation within a small tight-knit group ->
outsiders are excluded and learn to hate that group, seeing them as exploiters ->
group becomes yet more tight-knit, feeling under siege ->
group gets even richer because they cooperate better and trust each other more

There was a huge riot against Chinese in Indonesia as well, I had a friend in College who escaped one of the riots. They killed scores of people and looted/destroyed/burned at least 100 homes and businesses of ethnic Chinese.
