They were trying to cooperate and play nice with the West - they've been trying to do this for 2 decades. They wanted to expand markets, do manufacturing for Europe, etc. That window is now closed with this war, for a decade at least.

If Trump had been in office he would have engaged militarily which is why Russia didn’t invade while he was in office.

No he would not. Ukraine is not a US problem. The sanctions is all he would have done. Maybe made a few phone calls to Europe that would have been like, "You so worried now, then you fork up the $$$$ and send your kids to go fight."
The 40 billion dollar check has cleared, they don't need Ukraine anymore.
