He's basically given up finishing the series. Got his lucrative HBO spinoffs, his coffee table books, trying to get his friends some fame by editing Short Story collections, and pushing Woke Minorities shit writers who hate him and all white males into writing roles.
First four (actually 5, since the fourth was 80% done but split in two) books in less than 10 years. 11 years since his last book. They ain't coming.
I suspect two reasons: One, he had major success late in life and he's always wanted to write for TV (which he did in the 80s). Second, he doesn't give a crap and the publishing the side stuff keeps the publisher at bay while he can work on TV shit.
Dude was self-admitted locked himself in a cabin for all of 2020 and still didn't finish the book, but instead churned out with a lot of side projects
Martin had some TV writing credits (Beauty and the Beast) and some other books, he made a living at it, but those who supported his real claim to fortune and fame can fuck off now I guess. Which is fine, I don't buy any of his side shit.
I'm resolved never to finish the series, but whatever. It was the only fiction series I read for the first time in the 21st Century besides Clavell and O'Brien.
You mean he actually wrote books instead of just comix, computer games and HBO series? How old fashioned. He has the dough to have a ghost writer finish things up for him. I recommend even more strong, able, independent lesbians and medieval black computer geniuses. Lots more nekkid hookers wouldn't hurt, either.
He has a lot in common with Patrick Rothfuss in that way. Pat wrote two books of a three book series and hasn’t published another in twelve years. I read the first two when they were new and enjoyed them. But this wait for the third one seems to be waiting forever. Maybe he will die and someone else will finish his series? Like Robert Jordan? Although Jordan released 11 books of his 14 book series before kicking the bucket and his wife got Brandon Sanderson to finish. Sanderson did a pretty kick ass job and we got to see the end of that series. How lame is it to be cheering on the death of your favorite authors to finally get some closure on their series?
He's a terrible writer - repeats phrases, poor prose, diarrhea of the pen, etc. I couldn't even finish the first novel. He does plot well, with lots of salacious, creepy, incestuous, gay, murder and high-brow crazy antics. Hollywood loves this kinda stuff.
