Excerpt: ' However, the article "Dr. Jill Biden: 'All Americans Will Be Required to Learn Spanish When We Win,'" on the website US Mags Press states otherwise. The article features an embedded video of Jill Biden's June 30 appearance on ABC's "The View."

"She claims that the purpose of learning Spanish is to be competitive in the Western Hemisphere’s business and cultural arena. Obviously, this is not true," the article states.'

Whether or not this is true, either for the sake of politicizing Jill Biden or some faux pas nonsense, the TRUTH of the matter is that in Junior High School, many Americans are required to sign up for either Spanish or French for their foreign language requirements.

At first, I did Spanish for the requirement but later, as an adult, I studied French because I was banging Quebecoise up in Montreal.

In other words, rudimentary foreign language training is a part of the American education system, despite its many shortcomings.

This is a crazy idea to get voters.

Maybe she has dementia too? As Rin states this already occurs in I think every district in the country, so there is no new requirement Dr. Jill is coming up with. In IL it was either 2 years or 2 semesters of a foreign language. Pretty sure it was the full school year though to keep continuity and proficiency.

Did 4 years of Spanish in high school and 2 semester in college. I suck at it now after not using it for 18 years. But I can stumble through basic communication. There's also no chance in hell you'll get all Americans to learn it as a requirement and it sticks. Would be a wast of education on something useless for a lot of people. Rural America almost never interacts with Spanish speaking people. 5 restaurants in my town and not one even has a latino cook. All white townies.

What gets me is how horrendous Spanish people butcher the English language. But act so smug, and critical of any nuance of any mispronunciation of a Spanish word.

The international language of business, science and medicine is English.

I’m bilingual in Spanish but I studied French way back when.

Being able to converse in another language is fun, and it sometimes surprised people, but it was of no practical use really.

I recall a language option was Latin also.

Biden is full of shit.

Spanish is not much of a language in terms of Science, Literature, Culture. French, Russian, German, even Japanese/Mandarin would be far more valuable in those fields.

It's only useful for business if you deal with recent immigrants in LA or Hialeah. Almost all execs in Latin/Central America speak English.

Vacation would be another one. Anecdotal and simple, but even something as simple as saying gracias instead of thank you in English seems to get you better service. Tips help too. The people that try to speak their native language in say Mexico or Costa Rica to the natives, and don't even to try to do the basics seem to get the cold shoulder treatment from my experience. Europeans are the worst with this in my travels. This attitude that they know English and their own countries language, so figure it out you Mexican, is the attitude I've picked up.

Had an Italian guy in Costa Rica absolutely trash the pool wait staff all afternoon for example. It was probably a cultural thing. I wanted to punch him in the face, but he was probably 65 and I would have killing him if I did that. Did tell him to shut the fuck up. One of the rudest people verbally that I've ever witnessed or encountered.

Thing I hate most about Europeans is when they "pretend" they don't know about tipping.

Everybody in Europe knows in the New World, tipping is standard. They're just cheap socialists.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but all inclusive resorts can be the worst for that behavior. Yes. The words are all inclusive. But Europeans need to learn math and humility though.

Break down that $400/nt room you're staying in with your spouse and kids. Electric, food, booze, pool chemicals, water, cooking gas, grounds, taxes, a bunch of other shit, and the biggie.... EMPLOYEES. Your server at dinner likely makes shit money compared to first world standards. The bartender. Just throw them a buck when you get a drink. Throw $10-20 at dinner for servers. If you cannot afford an extra say $200-300 for a 7 night stay, you probably shouldn't be going on "holiday" in the first place. You'll get better service in the process and I frankly don't know how you'd go to bed feeling good about yourself as these slaves labored day and night for you probably making $20-30/day wages.

Both times I went to Thailand I found waitstaff to be insanely grateful for tips, as their usual European or Chinese/Japanese/Korean customers never tip. Some told me they love Americans.

The Europeans I met there were almost universally snotty, dismissive of me as an American. Some of the Brits weren’t bad, but the French truly didn’t want to know anyone who wasn’t French.

From what I've seen, "foreign language immersion" is used as an excuse to teach Spanish starting in 1st grade. When junior high rolls around... do you want to continue with 2 easy years to get your "3 years of a foreign language" or do you want to start all over with 3 challenging years in a different language?
12   Booger   2020 Sep 14, 12:14pm

I should be learning Polish. If Biden gets elected, or some other commie later, where the fuck am I gonna go?
13   mell   2020 Sep 14, 12:34pm

I like how it all ties back into banging hoes.

They should instead of Spanish teach “stupid” so we could finally understand Democrats.

I don't know but telling a Quebecoise, "Je veux ma bite en tu" which translates to "I want my cock inside you", seems to work.

"Bite" is French for cock? Is that where the phrase "bite me" comes from?

I've observed that learning foreign language is compulsory in high schools around (in CA). I am curious to know, is it true in other states as well and WHY, rather than keep it optional to make the life easy for kids that they do not use it anyway. I do not buy the theory of make one smart by learning more than one language.
18   krc   2020 Sep 14, 8:54pm

Let's face it. In CA, if you really want to be part of California culture - then Spanish is important. Or, you have no relevance to a third of the population. I have passable / conversational Spanish skills and it simply helps. When CA goes full Spanish as the primary language in the next 20-30 years, then everyone will need the skill and it won't be optional.

Demographics is everything.

Having options in high school for FR or GER or CHI is, IMO, wrong and a waste - if you live in CA, then learn Spanish. Spanish has a far longer history in CA and the west than English. I would not be surprised if Spanish is a "required" language in high school in the next 10-15 years.

I have rudimentary Spanish which I use on trips to Costa Rica. For shits and giggles mostly. Can totally do without even there. In CA? Never been in a situation I wished I was fluent in Spanish. California culture? What's that?

PS. I have nothing against knowing extra languages (and I'm fluent in two besides English), but saying that one can't live a full life in CA w/o Spanish is a stretch.
21   clambo   2020 Sep 15, 8:43am

I disagree with krc.
I’m bilingual and I lived in Mexico before I moved up to California 39 years ago.
The usefulness of speaking Spanish is overrated.

Makes sense actually, considering all the non-swear terms which originated from penis like "wanker", "got cocked", etc
