Be careful with this. A FFL will not sell you a pistol if you are an out of state resident. They will sell you a long gun.

Further fanning the flames, you can buy a rifle and a shotgun in Idaho and send it to California.
A non-resident can’t buy a handgun in Idaho.

Maybe a guy in Idaho could buy it and later sell it to you and then you send it to an FFL in California.

Then, you get the forms online and pay California DOJ a fee ($19?) and you get a letter “You may have your gun.”

Using anyone as a “straw man” to buy a gun is a crime so maybe forget the whole thing.

My motivation for the post is that I can’t find stock anywhere in the Bay Area for the handgun I’m looking to purchase legally in the state of CA.

Depends where you are. Not available in my area in N. IL. No ship to store or in store purchase either. The order button doesn't even show up like other guns. I've been looking and there's not much available out there online at least for handguns here in IL. I'm still doing my Covid duty and staying home as much as possible besides grabbing food, groceries and beer. lol. So I prefer online ordering. And I do have an FFL in my town as well.

How close is the nearest red town, maybe they would have more in stock and not such a high demand. Also you could order online and have it sent to your nearest FFL.

The 45 Colt is an awesome cartridge. Rossi has a similar model that will shoot 454 Casull or 45 Colt.

I have asked for Henry to offer this as an option because they both use 0.452" bullets. The Hornady FTX is safe in a tube magazine and performs a lot better than a flat nose bullet. A 454 Casull load shot from a carbine will achieve speeds in excess of 2,000 fps with 225 grain bullet. This will stop most animals or people in 1 hit.

The 357 Magnum version is good too. I dont own a 357 but I have shot them many times. You can safely use 38 Special in a 357 magnum firearm. You might even have a bit more magazine capacity when you load 38 special.

That Henry Rifle in .357/.38 is a great choice. Also the intimidation factor "Holy shit, I'm up against a Wild West Cowboy". And the legal factor: It looks less scary to a jury than a plastic TOTALLYTACTICAL rifle.

is one way to increase your response time if you don't have already a security system. It is low cost, wireless motion system devices (2 of them) with no monthly fee.

If the motion sensor goes off, it will scare the intruder as well as alert you.

Also the IPhone (and I believe Android phone) has the feature of pressing the power button 5 times to automatically call 911.

I like the Ruger carbine in 9mm. I shot my friend’s rifle and it was a blast with a red dot on it.

This afternoon I waited 1.5 hours in line at Turner Outdoorsman in San Marcos and put a down payment on a G19. Total cost including California sales tax is $647.

Of course they didn't have anything in stock but said they expect a bunch of Glocks to arrive in August. So I am probably 6-8 weeks away from getting my hands on it.

Virtually all of the pistols were sold out, so alot of people were just putting down payments and have to wait until next month to get them.

I asked if they could at least start the background check and 10 day waiting period now, but they said they can't do that until the gun hits their warehouse so they can assign a serial number to me.

That's OK. I promised my wife I wouldn't buy anything today. I just want to start looking and get the process going. I only had to put down $150 refundable deposit and provide ID. When I pick it up, I have to bring proof of residence and take the test for firearm safety certification.

Could be even faster if they have stock.
But there is no way around the check delays.

They said they can’t request the background check until the gun arrives at their warehouse so they can reference the serial number. I will be lucky to get It before the election!

This is an interesting thread! I still consider myself a gun noob, so I'll add some info that might be helpful.

Last week I waited about 40 minutes in line outside the Turner's Outdoorsman in Signal Hill (and I had an appointment!) before I was let in to order a new 9mm. There weren't any 9mm pistols in stock. I've been wanting to try a CZ 75, so I put a deposit down and they said they'd call me when it comes in. I figure sometime in August. The price is $669.99.

If you live in California, you're limited to 3rd generation Glocks. The newer ones aren't on the California Handgun Roster. This can be a problem if you're looking at pistols from online gun shops. Online gun shops HATE having to deal with Cal. gun laws. Many won't even ship to FFLs in our state anymore. The best-priced 9mms online are RARELY California compliant.

For 9mm, I only have a S&W SDVE 9mm (my first gun). I like it, and can shoot it fairly well. It has a tactile loaded chamber indicator, so I think it's a good first pistol, and pretty cheap (when I bought it 5 years ago).

I think the CZ 75 is the pistol I should have started with. It's all steel and heavy, so it's probably going to have less recoil than the SDVE. I'm hoping I do better at the range with it. It has a thumb safety, too. I'm not sure if Bay Area or Patrick have semi-automatic pistols yet, but if I had to start from scratch, I'd try a big heavy gun with a safety for my first 9mm .

If your gun of choice is not in stock in 9mm Luger consider buying it in .40s&w. Nothing wrong with that caliber it's just fell out of fashion lately so availability could be better during the panic. You'll have a gun you want albeit in different caliber and you can usually buy a 9mm Luger conversion kit for it later.

@brazil66, the first gun I bought was a CZ75B after shooting all of the guns that I could try.

You will enjoy shooting it. I recommend the compacts too. I have the CZ75 P01 compact, probably the perfect all around gun.

Check out Cajun Gun Works for things like sights and grips, etc.

I put a new set of sights on my CZ75, and rubber grips. The wood grips were nice, but I didn’t keep them.

Would a pump action AR-15 be legal in California? There are kits being used in New Zealand to convert the semi-autos to pump action with minimal effort.

The Colt 1911 was designed to have more stopping power. The Army .38 wouldn't penetrate sisal rope body armor worn by the Huks in the Phillippines, for example. The .45 cartridge fired just below center of mass of even heavy targets will sit them down. The immediate threat of a charging attacker is dealt with, follow up rounds will neutralize the threat. Even if fired off-center, heavy damage will result. When you run out of ammo, you can bludgeon them with the .45.

A 9mm doesn't have that kind of stopping power, but you can load 20 rounds in a single clip vs. 7 for the .45. If you practice, you shouldn't need more than 7 rounds to take out a target. And if you don't practice, why have a gun? Spray and pray is not a sound strategy for self-defense.

I have a similar one, bought just before the craze started. You might want to buy one with wood finish, may look less scary to jury. For home defense, bird shot is enough, it will not go through too many walls, which your neighbors will appreciate, and even under stress situation you will hit intruder as the shot scatters so a precise aim is not needed.

I bought a few (ca. 100) size 2 shot shells for home protection, even though I will never go bird hunting.

I used to carry one of these guns in a shoulder holster when i was 11. Good for scaring off (or putting down) belligerent moose when I was out and about in the Alaskan wilderness. Only had to do that once, when one was coming after me and my dog.

Yeah, the .45 packs a punch! The gun is heavy and well designed, so the recoil is very manageable. Certainly part of it's popularity. I qualified expert pistol at 17 during Plebe summer at Navy. I had shot long guns plenty by then but pistols were a new thing to me. Easy peasy.
