Hi guys,

Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

I’m looking to purchase a Glock19. Nobody, I mean nobody has this in stock in the Bay Area!

With Covid19 and the protests across the country, I’m being told that much of the Glock inventory that was present in gun stores across the Bay is sold out and it’s unlikely that more will be available for 4months+

Does anyone know where I can buy a Glock19 (legally) from a Bay Area gun store today? Anyone have stock?

Thanks

Not sure why the push for hi points other than they are cheap. I work in DoD with a bunch of military guys who know/love guns. Their impression is that they are an ok cheap solution if you want a firearm, but none of the people I know would trust one with their lives.

Most are carrying Glock, MP Shield, Sig & Kimber.

I own a glock and it has been a good shooter. I had a few malfunctions early on before it had been broken in and it has run perfectly since then. I also own three Hipoints (45 carbine, 9 mm carbine, and a 9 mm handgun) and they have never had a malfunction despite putting hundreds of rounds through them. I have never disassembled them. I simply add oil where the manual says to add it and run a bore snake through it.

What do you do if you need to buy now but can't get into a range to break a new gun in or you can't find anything "good" for sale?

My answer is to buy a new 45 Hipoint or find an old used 38 revolver. The 38 revolver is common, lots of old people have them, and they are not very popular compared to the semi-autos. There are probably many 38s not known about by the authorities so you can probably get one through a private party transaction without filling out a 4473. This is legal under federal law as long as the parties reside in the same state. I would be surprised if it were legal in California. You then have to ask yourself what is best for yourself.

If you don't own a gun right now, you don't have the luxury of time to get the best gun. You need something cheap that will simply work every time you pull the trigger. I would feel more confident giving my mom a heavy Hi-point pistol than a "good" new gun because the recoil will be less with the Hi-point and I know how idiot proof it is.

Lets talk about ammo availability. I would take this bet every time. I bet you will be more likely to find 45 acp ammo on the self than 9 x19 right now. I saw this first hand for many years during the Obama years. I would also bet you will find more 45 acp in the wild at a garage sale than 9 mm. Many if not most of these "good" new guns are found in the 9 mm flavors. The older crowd favored the 45 acp and they are dying off.

Ammo is not an issue for me because I have my press, plenty of spent cases, new primers, various powders, and plenty of .308" and .452" bullets (rifle and pistol flavors). I can feed my 300 AAC carbine for a very long time and I could make "new" cases from old spent 5.56x45 cases. I can also feed a 1911 or my Bushmaster 450 rifle with the .452" bullets. I love the .308" bullets because I can feed the 300 aac, AR-10/bolt action Ruger Gun Scout in 308 Winchester or my M1 Garand. Most people don't even know that it is possible to reload/hand load ammo! Had the 350 Legend been out 10 years ago (it uses .355" bullets), I may have gone with the 9 mm instead of the .452" sized firearms.

You have to accept what you can get and what you can find to feed the gun under the current circumstances.

Just remember California, you did this to yourself.

Be careful with this. A FFL will not sell you a pistol if you are an out of state resident. They will sell you a long gun.

It would be illegal, that's all. Ship it to CA FFL and do proper transfer once back home.

Long gun is what I was thinking about getting. Maybe ammo if it's cheaper there, I already have 3-4k rounds

Further fanning the flames, you can buy a rifle and a shotgun in Idaho and send it to California.
A non-resident can’t buy a handgun in Idaho.

Maybe a guy in Idaho could buy it and later sell it to you and then you send it to an FFL in California.

Then, you get the forms online and pay California DOJ a fee ($19?) and you get a letter “You may have your gun.”

Using anyone as a “straw man” to buy a gun is a crime so maybe forget the whole thing.

S&W MP9 Shield. No glocks in the entire Phoenix valley when I bought mine in March. 9mm ammo still in short supply. I have mine in my nightstand by the bed. Loaded. Fuck locks, burglars won't have their guns in a gun safe when they enter my home.

The kids who are old enough to reach the gun have been taught how to use it.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments, few things:

a.) I started the discussion in reference to legal gun ownership. Although I appreciate the reminder that we don’t know who is lurking and reading these posts, there’s nothing Wrong with what’s being discussed.

My motivation for the post is that I can’t find stock anywhere in the Bay Area for the handgun I’m looking to purchase legally in the state of CA.

b.) although I appreciate the suggestions, my mind is made up and I’m not considering any alternatives to the Glock19 at this time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Depends where you are. Not available in my area in N. IL. No ship to store or in store purchase either. The order button doesn't even show up like other guns. I've been looking and there's not much available out there online at least for handguns here in IL. I'm still doing my Covid duty and staying home as much as possible besides grabbing food, groceries and beer. lol. So I prefer online ordering. And I do have an FFL in my town as well.

Yep I agree with this. In today’s world you can’t be too cautious about the information you let out. Some fucktard bureaucrat or politician can drop a dime on you with numerous agencies to fuck up your life. Social media especially is not safe. Don’t say anything on there ever if possible it could get attached to your real identity.

How close is the nearest red town, maybe they would have more in stock and not such a high demand. Also you could order online and have it sent to your nearest FFL.

The 45 Colt is an awesome cartridge. Rossi has a similar model that will shoot 454 Casull or 45 Colt.

I have asked for Henry to offer this as an option because they both use 0.452" bullets. The Hornady FTX is safe in a tube magazine and performs a lot better than a flat nose bullet. A 454 Casull load shot from a carbine will achieve speeds in excess of 2,000 fps with 225 grain bullet. This will stop most animals or people in 1 hit.

The 357 Magnum version is good too. I dont own a 357 but I have shot them many times. You can safely use 38 Special in a 357 magnum firearm. You might even have a bit more magazine capacity when you load 38 special.
77   MisdemeanorRebel   2020 Jul 1, 2:19pm

That Henry Rifle in .357/.38 is a great choice. Also the intimidation factor "Holy shit, I'm up against a Wild West Cowboy". And the legal factor: It looks less scary to a jury than a plastic TOTALLYTACTICAL rifle.

Mr Nuttboxer,

The Doberman security system (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Doberman-Security-Wireless-Door-Motion-Detector-Alarm-2-Pack-SE-0104-2PK/301170036)
is one way to increase your response time if you don't have already a security system. It is low cost, wireless motion system devices (2 of them) with no monthly fee.

If the motion sensor goes off, it will scare the intruder as well as alert you.

Also the IPhone (and I believe Android phone) has the feature of pressing the power button 5 times to automatically call 911.

AD sends...........
79   EBGuy   2020 Jul 1, 3:19pm

Just be aware that some .357 loads will go through a foot of sheet rock or pine. There goes the neighborhood.
Anyone have one these shotguns for home protection? Plus: no pistol grip. Minus: all black. What would a jury think of Muh 20 inch barrel....
80   clambo   2020 Jul 1, 3:19pm

I like the Ruger carbine in 9mm. I shot my friend’s rifle and it was a blast with a red dot on it.
81   socal2   2020 Jul 1, 3:49pm

This afternoon I waited 1.5 hours in line at Turner Outdoorsman in San Marcos and put a down payment on a G19. Total cost including California sales tax is $647.

Of course they didn't have anything in stock but said they expect a bunch of Glocks to arrive in August. So I am probably 6-8 weeks away from getting my hands on it.

Many of the people I spoke to in line were first time gun shoppers and lamenting how retarded Democrat politicians have become with the Defund the Police B.S.

Did they offer any thoughts on how the reality of buying a gun turned out different from their expectations of how easy it was supposed to be? Did they think we need to make people to jump through even more hoops or the ones we already have is (more than) enough?

I didn't get that far into discussion with them.

Virtually all of the pistols were sold out, so alot of people were just putting down payments and have to wait until next month to get them.

I asked if they could at least start the background check and 10 day waiting period now, but they said they can't do that until the gun hits their warehouse so they can assign a serial number to me.

That's OK. I promised my wife I wouldn't buy anything today. I just want to start looking and get the process going. I only had to put down $150 refundable deposit and provide ID. When I pick it up, I have to bring proof of residence and take the test for firearm safety certification.

The check itself can take 2-3 weeks now. Crazy backlog.

But there is no way around the check delays.

This is an interesting thread! I still consider myself a gun noob, so I'll add some info that might be helpful.

Last week I waited about 40 minutes in line outside the Turner's Outdoorsman in Signal Hill (and I had an appointment!) before I was let in to order a new 9mm. There weren't any 9mm pistols in stock. I've been wanting to try a CZ 75, so I put a deposit down and they said they'd call me when it comes in. I figure sometime in August. The price is $669.99.

If you live in California, you're limited to 3rd generation Glocks. The newer ones aren't on the California Handgun Roster. This can be a problem if you're looking at pistols from online gun shops. Online gun shops HATE having to deal with Cal. gun laws. Many won't even ship to FFLs in our state anymore. The best-priced 9mms online are RARELY California compliant.

For 9mm, I only have a S&W SDVE 9mm (my first gun). I like it, and can shoot it fairly well. It has a tactile loaded chamber indicator, so I think it's a good first pistol, and pretty cheap (when I bought it 5 years ago).

I think the CZ 75 is the pistol I should have started with. It's all steel and heavy, so it's probably going to have less recoil than the SDVE. I'm hoping I do better at the range with it. It has a thumb safety, too. I'm not sure if Bay Area or Patrick have semi-automatic pistols yet, but if I had to start from scratch, I'd try a big heavy gun with a safety for my first 9mm .
91   RWSGFY   2020 Jul 1, 6:35pm

If your gun of choice is not in stock in 9mm Luger consider buying it in .40s&w. Nothing wrong with that caliber it's just fell out of fashion lately so availability could be better during the panic. You'll have a gun you want albeit in different caliber and you can usually buy a 9mm Luger conversion kit for it later.
92   clambo   2020 Jul 1, 6:42pm

@brazil66, the first gun I bought was a CZ75B after shooting all of the guns that I could try.

You will enjoy shooting it. I recommend the compacts too. I have the CZ75 P01 compact, probably the perfect all around gun.

Check out Cajun Gun Works for things like sights and grips, etc.

I put a new set of sights on my CZ75, and rubber grips. The wood grips were nice, but I didn’t keep them.

Would a pump action AR-15 be legal in California? There are kits being used in New Zealand to convert the semi-autos to pump action with minimal effort.

96   rocketjoe79   2020 Jul 3, 8:29am

The Colt 1911 was designed to have more stopping power. The Army .38 wouldn't penetrate sisal rope body armor worn by the Huks in the Phillippines, for example. The .45 cartridge fired just below center of mass of even heavy targets will sit them down. The immediate threat of a charging attacker is dealt with, follow up rounds will neutralize the threat. Even if fired off-center, heavy damage will result. When you run out of ammo, you can bludgeon them with the .45.

A 9mm doesn't have that kind of stopping power, but you can load 20 rounds in a single clip vs. 7 for the .45. If you practice, you shouldn't need more than 7 rounds to take out a target. And if you don't practice, why have a gun? Spray and pray is not a sound strategy for self-defense.
