I think we "need" the peak if that makes sense, to get rid of the panic around this. S. Korea may be just dragging it out longer. There's a reason we don't have all that many ventilators in the country. You're basically dead once you hit that level. CV-19 or not.
I'm not numb to the tragedy this will cause. My babysitter for the last 5 years lost her last grandparent last night to it. Small town, so we knew her a little bit. Babysitter has a part time job, but we're now not going to use her for a while. Nor will my neighbors that use her. No one can go out. We were all probably worth $500-600/mo for her. Not saying you or anyone in particular, but I think the work from home crowd is totally isolated from the reality of what's going on.
She lost her grandma, but will likely lose another family member or two because of other issues. The mental health issues are going to be devastating. Grief from death is one thing. Death, job loss and emotional stress all combined is a mix of shit that's gonna fuck people up. Not sure you can even physically see a therapist right now. So people gonna pound the bottle and drugs. We'd be better off with people dealing with the death emotions by themselves and not all the other shit that's coming their way....

States are continuing to keep attractions open like the mayor in Jaws, but a national lockdown of all non-essential congregation would be the best way to curtail the epidemic. Close down all parks, beaches, bars, restaurants, churches, schools, and non-essential businesses. Yes, there will be an economic hit, but that will still happen if the epidemic lasts months and reinfections, resurgences, and mutations of the virus happen. So it's really a matter of reducing the death toll by keeping any non-essential, non-web-base business short down.
