The irony is the Jewish penalty for blasphemy (among other sins) was stoning. He was crucified by the Roman's under the pretext of inciting a rebellion against the state.

(Allegedlly calling himself "King of the Jews", which he never actually claimed.)

In essence, the Jewish leaders of the day let Rome do their dirty work form them.

Well, I don't know, but I suppose being deprived of the ability to stand, would make it more difficult to stop suffocation. But I don't know.
