Lawsuit awards are typically not taxed.

I've heard this as well. I think the reasoning is that the winner is being compensated for a loss, so lawsuit awards are not earnings.

I don't know how it works.

But...I have received money from class action lawsuits against former employers and it was taxed. One was for 5k in 2008 and the other for 13k in 2021. Both checks came with a 1099 attached.
