I find it curious that the media hasn't savaged him for saying that. But I think the reason is twofold.
First it's a brilliant example of Cognitive Dissonance, like Scott Adams showed how Trump was using it in the 2016 election. It was true and it was hilarious. So then they wanted to mitigate the story by making him Backtrack, Apologize and fear being canceled. But instead he told them, if folks get bent out of shape let them. He said it stoically and left it at that. Another thing that has been long over due to be said. It's also what people are growing tired of, being told how to think and what to be outraged about. So now they can't go out and hype it up in the news, and use it for a bad mark on those meanie Misogynists GOP republicans. When just a year ago it would have been the perfect rocket fuel to put some hyper rage, for the next two election cycles.
