Republican candidate for California governor, Assemblyman Travis Allen, says the homeless population should be in state-run institutions where they can receive services. Randall Benton The Sacramento Bee

The homeless ambiance is so "California" now. I was at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, and watched a grizzled, leering homeless guy screaming obscenities at a volleyball beach babe in a thong. "I hope the rest of it falls off, you fuck!"

The homeless are starting to stake out the rest rooms at the oceanside walks, making them even more high hazard zones to actually defecate. Water fountain? If you want to walk through the homeless guy with all of his junk around it.

That's exactly how I remember Santa Cruz. What sad is people walk around like nothing is happening.

Reality, it's a beautiful part of the country, but is near third world status for many of the people.

Allen's idea is nice, but we should go a step further.

Why not create a "Bum Brigade"? A combat ready unit made up of homeless people. 8-10 weeks of basic training, followed by another 6 weeks of small arms tactics.

Send them into combat as peacekeepers, or shock troops. Either way, they'd be earning their 3 squares a day, and lodging.

Those institutions can be competitively run, providing residents with food, shelter and job training, perhaps even drugs for adults-only facilities . . . so that the homeless and those on welfare can pick and choose which one to go . . . so they are not prisons but more like assisted living facilities for the those unwilling to work/earn a living.

It's a much more efficient way of taking care of the homeless and preventing street crimes than welfare is. Giving them a basic level of food and sustenance in the facilities is likely less costly than even setting them loose on public land forcing them live off the land . . . simply because modern industrial farming is much more productive than a guy farming with hand tools (even a hard working one, never mind the homeless).

The residents can choose to learn marketable skills, or choose to take opioids that lead to their joyful demise sooner or later. Win-win for everyone involved. The best part is that, the homeless would no longer be in a vulnerable position subject to random violence from each other in the streets.

Rather there is a blatant unwillingness to engage in modern society and rather than move to a rural area where one can work off the land to feed and shelter oneself

Nah, if you're poor, there is no available land that you can work off. Land costs a fortune.
You can't build your own rudimentary home on unowned property: there are no unowned properties.
There is no economic liberty to do what our ancestors did.

At best the question you can ask is why do we need illegal immigrants if we have so many useless people? Are they just not desperate enough to do the job?

Estimated 180,000 people live off the grid. There’s a ton of federal land and also a ton of land that people don’t actively check on. There’s actually a liberal minded enclave on the coast of Washington where people live this way. The difference is those people are productive and don’t interfere with anyone. Urban homeless are shiftless addicts who make life worse for those nearby.

We don’t need illegals. We need to stop feeding and housing people in time of unlimited jobs. If we do that and then need more workers, we can start a guest worker program.

No, living on federal or public lands is illegal and sooner or later someone will report you and you will be kicked out.
As for living "off the grid": it means something else: "being off the grid means living in a 265-square-foot home not connected to a sewer system, a city's electrical grid or gas utilities."

I disagree with this approach. It’s not a new idea, and it’ll have unintended consequences like the last time this was done.

Which basically limits you to 30 miles away from Winnemucca or Cheyenne.

So crazy guys like this don't get shot after they spend an hour pointing what looked like a pistol as passerbys.
