People have to break a law, even in a riot, to be arrested. Sorry you missed that in your education. The students that broke windows were arrested. Wintrich was arrested for grabbing someone by the throat and throwing them down. He was free to have a cop stop the person and press charges for stealing his paper but chose to be a vigilante instead. He should man up about it instead of being a whiney cry baby.

Logic has nothing to do with it. The only thing that matters is what is written in the statutes. The general legal standard, with slight variation state to state, is you can defend yourself if you are in imminent danger or being attacked with force equal to your attacker. Someone walking away with a piece of paper doesn't qualify as imminent danger in any state no matter how much people whine about it. This is a very very simple foundation legal principle that every citizen should know. Did you somehow miss taking US Government in high school and college?

I've never heard a judge, and doubt any jury outside of Berkeley, ever agree with prosecutors who tried to charge somebody who chased down a thief to get his shit back and got into it with him for his shit back.

We don't want to create a precedent where violent thieves can operate in broad daylight and sue if people stop them with force.
