I'm big fan of permaculture and practice it on what space I have but for the average person it will not matter if SHTF except for maybe having skills and knowledge that you can take with you since the basics seem to be lost on most modern society.

There are details that are troublesome about striving to live independently from your fellow man and the stores that are controlled by oligarchs. They will immediately discover what you must have to survive and start controlling you on that basis, as they have for the entire history of the human race.
In other words there is really no other choice than to regain control over our government.
