That's what killed Mark Frechette, star of Zabriskie Point (1970), who played under his own name and character, which was last on the list in a book titled The 100 Worst Movies Ever Made. His female companion, Daria Halprin, also played under her real name in a movie about hippiedom at its worst at one of the worst times in late 20th century history. Frechete was a complete jerk and moron in real life as can be seen here in his interview with Dick Cavitt along with Halprin. He was busted for drugs and while in prison in 1975, a barbell just happened to fall across his worthless neck while he was alone in the prison gym. It's clear these two were no lost to the film world.

Frechette was generally a professional turd who fought with everybody, was probably killed by somebody in prison, but nobody gave a rat's ass.

The ole "barbell death" is usually trotted out when somebody is garroted that nobody will miss and nobody wants to waste time doing the paper work for.

Just saw Zabriskie Point. It is definitely an exceptionally bad movie.

Was interesting to see LA in 1970 though. Almost completely white. Tons of blonde people. Where did they all go? Just swamped by Hispanics?

Zabriskie Point was from the olden days when going out to the desert to drop acid, watch the stars, and engage in naked hippie rutting was the rage. They did have scenes from Telegraph Avenue from the wayback machine. I have the vinyl record of the sound track with various Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd. The Grateful Dead stuff was pretty pedestrian.
