More generally, is money from gofundme taxable? You are allowed to give quite large gifts to friends tax free. I don't see how using the internet to make friends who then give you money is all that different. This seems like the secular version of passing a plate around in church to raise money for someone's sick kid. How is that handled? How is it supposed to be handled?

Couldn't she spend down that money pretty quickly? If so, are there things she could buy like said fridge or furniture that would put her back into being poor enough for bennies?

Also, what would her prospects be via PPACA? PPACA subsidies go up to almost 100K for certain families as a multiple of the FPL. At their roughly 15K in earnings, wouldn't they be able to get that fancy private insurance?
