Muslims have a long history of rewriting history they don't like. Defacing national landmarks and defaming historic figures, pretty much cleansing the records and injecting their own realities. It's pretty much the only objective that Obama can even keep focused on.

I believe the so-called age of the Islamic scholasticism was in fact, the pilfering of the old Persian Empire, which BTW, also housed Plato's Academy, once Byzantine kicked out old school types from Christian Orthodoxy.

The Muslims didn't invent much. They do get mad props for Algebra. (Moroccans actually built awesome cities and castles, and their design skills were amazing. Without Moorish architects there would be no Spanish cathedrals... Or any cathedrals for that matter).
As for discovering America, the evidence is pretty strong that Eric the Red made it to Greenland and Chinese junks made it to Peru. But let's be clear: It wasn't so much about "finding" America at the end of the day, it was about colonizing the New World. And the Spaniards were better than anyone in the world at that in the late 15th century. England was still a minor power at the time.
But to the comments above, we have rewritten plenty of history too.

The Muslims didn't invent much. They do get mad props for Algebra, but that was Moroccans and Moors who have always been a more civilized lot than the camel jockeys in the east.
They weren't even Muslims when Algebra was invented. Any potential they had was fried when Islam was shoved down their throats.
