Companies have a new solution to rising health-insurance costs: Break up their employees’ marriages.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) will no longer cover employees’ spouses on the company health plan. And while it’s not the only company to have adopted the policy, it’s among the largest. Some 15,000 UPS spouses who can obtain health coverage through their own jobs will be dropped from the plan. In a memo to employees, the company explained that the change was intended to offset the effects of the Affordable Care Act, which were expected to increase its health care costs by 4%.

If you can't stay profitable under conditions which, though they are changing, affect your competitors as much as they affect you, then you lack the skills to run a business.

I know of many smaller companies who have done this to cut cost. I'm surprised the big boys are just catching on.

Hey whatever it takes to divorce health care from work compensation packages

Yes: one big problem is that we are wedded to this "employer handles health care" practice. That worked okay when people stayed for years with one employer. Today? Not so well...

It affects workers whose spouses are able to be covered under their own health insurance policies. Many companies do this.

I can see the future billboards now...

"Your wife is sick, you better call an insurance navigator."

Which would be a play on that tasteless billboard by Air around the clock, "Your wife is hot, you better call an air conditioner repairman."

Which they really wanted to go with, "You're about as dumb as a bag of hammers, you better get your AC fixed."

But they were afraid the DNC would have sued them for plagiarizing their 2012 campaign platform.
