I have a TSP account that I invest in the 2040 target date fund. I also have a Roth and a brokerage account that are not connected to my TSP. I would like to find a good mutual fund or two for funds in my Roth account. I looked at the Fidelity 2030 fund, but was reading that the fees for it were a little high.

I am a relative novice here, so please forgive my relative ignorance here.

I would like a fund or two to invest in for the next 15 to 17 years. I am curious about ETFs, funds with a mix of stocks and bond or funds with stocks only. Can you guys make any recommendations of specific funds that I should look at?

I am also curious about how I move money into the fund. Should I do something like a dollar cost averaging strategy and buy a certain amount per month or move say 30k at once?

Any recommendations are appreciated.

I don't know of any ETF's that blend stocks/bonds into one that isn't a target date fund. I'm not a fan of them either because of the expenses.

The general rule of thumb is find a large cap growrth stock index fund or an S&P500 index fund. They come in mutual fund and ETF varieties. I'm not sure how TSP's work, but look for anything Vanguard, they're the big boys in town. https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/etf

For bonds Pimco is the de-facto one people go with, ticker PTTRX.

As for averaging, plop in your 30K today and average in every month. I automatically deposit money on the 1rst of every month, regardless of what the market is doing. Don't try and time the market!
