SALT LAKE CITY - A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store.

Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people..."

...Then, before the suspect could find another victim - a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. "A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith's grabbed him."

Fodder for the recent gun control threads.

Now that's quality journalism right there.

Good for him, this is the kind of situation where an armed civilian can and did do good.

I just hate hearing gun nuts compare this with the theater shooting, which would amount to a circular firing squad in that particular situation.

As a martial artist, I have to ask-what about knowing how to take away the knife and subdue the crazy man with your bare hands?

As a marital artist, I have to ask - Could hugs and cuddling have solved this situation?

No doubt this particular instance the shooter took advantage of the environment knowing his actions would blend in with a violent film, be covered by darkness and confusion. Nonetheless, if you were in the theater, would you personally prefer to be unarmed or armed? I'd like to have the option to decide my fate if I was not among the first to get shot.

Sure enough, not a bad option if you've got the skillset. I have a good buddy who is an expert MA with a focus on Filipino style, who argues that within 20 feet someone with his skillset can generally disarm someone with a firearm.

Me? Heat.

I wonder if the journalists would have written the same about James Holmes: "James Holmes bought his guns in June and several weeks later, upon entering the theater, turned them into weapons!"

Goes to show some bias, I suppose.

Disarm a knife wielding lunatic by hand?
That sounds about as smart and easy as grabbing a rattlesnake.

I'm with Leopold, give me a heater any day.

You could just pick up something heavy like a bread rack and try to bully him down with it, that's prolly what I'd be looking to do in a case like that. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't be found hiding under the Twinkie rack waiting for the police to come "save" me.

he'd be having to duck flying cans of spegetti-o's, chili beans, and other fine, handy sized, projectiles. And here in Mexifornia he would be able to sue me, the store, the brand name, and the company that made the can, if I happened to hurt him in the response. It's not his fault he's a killer, ask any liberal. Companies and bad people just spring up out of nothingness, like their big-bang idea.

Props to Bap33 for somehow managing to denounce lunatics, knives, California, canned beans, liberalism and cosmology all in a single reply. I'm only going to dock you for ommitting abortion, cloning, secular humanism, scientology and tofu.

Yeah let's be kung fu fighters.
Sorry, I prefer the 9mm in +P with hollow points, ouch!
I would not bring my bare hands to a knife fight no matter what kind of marital arts I was trained in.

As a connoisseur of action movies I totally agree with this...

...however, realistically I agree with this.

As an advocate of reason and reality I realize that even the most highly trained fighters have a high probability of being shot or cut when trying to perform a disarm someone that is not holding a rubber knife or gun.

Sadly this is how action moves end in the real world:

Well, if only the rest of us advocated "reason and reality" the world would be a much better place. But unfortunately, it's just you. ;-)
