Which is exactly why I rather be dead that that old and helpless. Who the hell wants to sit in a wheelchair in the own filth for an extended period of time? When you don't know who your are or were you are it's time to pull the plug. If i ran things there be a yearly test to proof you were competent enough to exist. If therapy or medication is needed to pass, fine, if nothing helps you, lethal injection time. Call me cold hearted, but in reality I believe it far more humane to let someone die with dignity then have them just exist for for the sake of existing.

Why just apply that to the elderly or non ambulatory?
It's possible to have quality of life in a nursing home. It's a place you go to live out your final years, and there are activities and things to do.

Until you're faced with this issue yourself, you won't truly understand that there can be a quality of life in even the most extreme of circumstances. I've seen severely debilitated patients with diseases such as Parkinson's and MS who still have quality, although not by my standards. That's why we need to protect these patients and ensure that they can live with dignity - not just die with dignity.

This page contains several articles about how nursing homes are evaluated, why they are rarely fined for infractions, etc. It's a good read.Â
