I took a course once from an expert who tried to catalog everything that people used to get high. It is an impossible task, as he acknowledged, because there are always new things that only emerge as they are recognized in the addicted, injured or dead. The incredibly multiple ways people use to get stoned make you crosseyed after listening to a few hours of this stuff.
There are thousands of things that people use to get high in one way or another. Drug dealers are always finding things to cut their shit and improve their profit margins. That one place in Philadelphia where the addicts nod out in a standing but bent over position means there is some strange adulterant, because they don't even fall all the way down as with pure narcotics.
Sad fact is that true, terminal addiction to things like narcotics are over 90 percent fatal in the long run, very few recover. They are literal walking dead zombies.
Although we tend to look at such things in USA as weeping co-dependent Sallies, the Chinese have used draconian, punitive measures against narcotics addictions, and the relapse rates still run to high nineties.
All peoples, across history, have sought to alter their consciousness. (apparently only the Inuit had zero means to do so until we showed up). Addiction is another thing, it is an indicator of social despair. Nobody does this to themselves who has anything at all to live for. In my life experience all cities had skid rows, some grittier than others. I have never seen anything approaching this degradation until the last 10-15 years.
The strangest thing about those vides of Kensington Av. or wherever it is in Philly are the few 'normal' looking people strolling around the drug carnage as if things are just the usual usual, guards standing outside of stores etc. It seems to add to the grotesquerie.
