The operator of the biggest gasoline pipeline in the U.S. shut down operations late Friday following a ransomware attack that threatens to roil energy markets and upend the supply of gas and diesel to the East Coast.

Colonial Pipeline said in a statement Saturday that it “proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our IT systems.” It’s working to get business back to normal.

I find it impossible to believe that the CIA and FBI cannot find a ransomware crook by tracking the bitcoin wallet or proton mail address. I wonder what the reason is that large scale ransomware is allowed to flourish.

Colonial Pipeline’s CEO, Joseph Blount, confirmed that the company paid $4.4 million to ransomware attackers, with executive uncertainty surrounding the severity of the cyberattack’s impact on the firm’s systems and the duration in which the pipeline would remain shutdown influencing the decision.

“I know that’s a highly controversial decision,” Blount told the Wall Street Journal in a May 19 statement. “I didn’t make it lightly. I will admit that I wasn’t comfortable seeing money go out the door to people like this.”

The reason that the FBI isn't classifying this as terrorism is that it is illegal to send funds to a terrorist organization,

Can't have someone like Blount facing criminal charges. That's just not done. ---- Hence, no terrorism.
