Has California figured out online school?

Now that the great summer debate has been settled and most California schools will be teaching online instead of opening their classrooms for the fast-approaching school year, parents like Martin Rauchwerk have one request: Reassure us online instruction will be better this time around.

“I forgave them for the spring,” said Rauchwerk, whose younger son will be a junior at San Jose’s Leland High School, “but I’m not going to forgive them for the fall.”

State and local officials say online schooling will look a lot different than in the spring. Districts say they’ll make sure students have computers and check in daily. Those students will also follow a regular bell schedule and be graded, unlike when schools were thrown into chaos after the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shuttered classrooms in March.

Online learning requires intrinsically motivated learners. Giving the high school clown or the struggling to read elementary school student a chromebook and a bell schedule is not going to insure education. In addition these kids cannot be left at home alone. Once again chaos will reign supreme in our already fucked up California education system.

Expect more gang violence, wilding in the streets, and even less "equality" of educational outcomes. The kids are screwed.

That is $84B for 2020 CA edu budget!

Once everything we do is done online we’re effectively in a matrix. All I have to do is control the input areas and what you see. I love what is taking place. I’m a homebody noways!

There should be an immediate 50% cut in school budgets if students aren't schlepping to the physical school. The fact that they made it MORE expensive should be a full stop for everyone concerned (on the taxpayer side that is).

The flip side is that it'll be easier to take screen shots and video clips to show the brainwashing that is happening. Many old people that aren't plugged in still think that k-5 was just like their k-5... learning reading, writing, and arithmetic in a straight-forward way and with minimal political or social agenda.

True. Math haha dream on last session before the break was on the big bullshit leftoid lie of systemic racism. For elementary school kids! Fuck CA and fuck the leftoids endorsimg this idiocracy. Also one teacher said it's not ok to hire teachers to watch over kids in single or group settings during online schooling, because poorer parents cannot afford that! Fuck this asshole maybe they should quit and donate their overpaid salary to a have not family since kids aren't learning squat in school these days anyways. It's more of a glorified daycare, albeit a necessary one. Again, fuck CA!

They're really fucking up. There are still people with jobs, but they can't continue forever without child care.

"Just pay for child care?" Then what the fuck if the point of closing schools if ANOTHER 30-something female is going to watch 25 kids instead of the Teacher, plus you have to pay out of pocket?

Now that fucking Gayin Newscum has prohibited even private schools to reopen properly I'm actually considering temporarily moving to a neighboring (or even distant) state and enrolling my kids in school there. Spending a winter in SLC actually sounds like tons of fun, with all the skiing and NPs nearby...

This CA school situation is probably the biggest stress my wife and I have encountered as parents.

Some parents want to keep their kids home, fine. Others who don’t should be allowed to send their kids to school.

And why aren’t property taxes being reduced if schools aren’t reopening?? You can’t have it both ways.

Yeah exactly. Fucking teachers offering paid tutoring while they should be teaching. City offering to let kids go to community centers for learning and that’s safe, but school buildings aren’t. It’s fucked up.

Teachers work very hard...getting government out of the schools would be great for teachers' salaries. They should be paid more...GOOD teachers can easily make $80K to $100K at an international school.

The CDC says kids should go back to school.

Hi BayArea,
what grade(s) are your kid(s) in? Would you mind sharing the pluses and minuses of the remote learning?

My cousin is a teacher in SoCal and is a motivated one. A keeper in other words. She's so fucking bored she started taking the Prius out and delivering via instacart. She's getting lots of exercise running around grocery stores. She's through and through Texan but moved here due to her husband.

Some enterprising teachers should set up a semi-home-school shop. Parents still get to drop the kids off and they manage the online education, perhaps through https://www.khanacademy.org/ and the other 'baby-sitting' sort of stuff + questiongs. I think they might be able to handle more kids/educator vs. any other school AND deliver a quality education.

Latest I heard from my school is the unions do not want to open back up until a safe effective vaccine is produced. They think possibly the middle of 2021. We might be able to get our kids back in school next September. Maybe.
