A new report from Yelp reveals that in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward metro area, more than 5,000 business have closed either temporarily or permanently between March 1 and July 10. That’s the second highest closure rate relative to total businesses in the U.S.

Restaurants have been a marginal business for a long time, 50% fail anyway.

I do feel sorry for the family joints, they may have few employment options.

I’m a little bit frugal, I was around fishermen and saw their boom and bust lives, and it made me a saver for a rainy day. I never forgot how much financial stress they had, although fishing has a more romantic reputation in movies, etc.

The government has fucked over a lot of people, and I hope we can get out of the grasp of idiots like Newsom.

Almost all of my friends think I am a little crazy for my ways, but I don’t hardly go to restaurants since Florida, it’s rarely worth it to me here.

My favorite restaurant was Puccini Cafe in North Beach, but it had a fire and closed a few years ago.

I agree with you on the history of Republicans more willing to let chains move in

Just admit, reflexively blaming mom and pop restaurant closures on the left like that was factually wrong and irrelevant to the problem and potential solutions.

mell says
If a local community wants to prevent chains moving in I have no problems with that, and if done in a lawful manner, most Republicans probably wouldn't object either.

My point is, Republicans ARE the pro-chains-moving-in side of this argument, again admit blaming the left was wrong and follow that idea upstream from where you heard it. You'll find a right wing propaganda engine that works against your own personal interests, guaran-damn-tee you.

The fatal flaw here is, rank and file Republicans think the Republican position is pro-b...

This has nothing with some big business conspiracy, fact is, the Democrat leaders destroyed the small shops and restaurants in one quick swoop with their ridiculous covid shutdowns. No evil big business lobbyist could have done even a small fraction of that destruction in a decade.

However, in some places (Hawaii) they are conspiring together and taking advantage of the situation.

It doesn't matter.

We are headed straight into a Depression, so there will be very little air travel to places like Hawaii. Back to the days of camping trips. Nothing wrong with that. Some say the quality of life was higher in the days when camping trips was the more normal leisure travel mode than air travel trips.

And no, the lockdowns, shutdowns, quarantines are not the cause of the Depression. They are just the trigger. The cause is that we are up to our eyeballs in debt: Mortgage Debt, Student Loan Debt, Car Loan Debt, Credit Card Debt, Medical Bill Debt, Corporate Debt, Local Government ("tax exempt bonds") Debt, U.S. Treasury Debt.

I still get daily booking requests. There are plenty of haves out there with lots of $. That's the same crap the local government keeps trying to sell there. They are so afraid of tourism coming back they are trying to force the rental car companies to ditch half of their cars and to force tourists to use a shuttle to go to 'resorts' then 'stay at the resorts' <- Even after the virus thing is over.

Can't argue with that too much. Way fucking more than a trigger when you shut an economy down like this. You don't 'stop' a 20 Trillion dollar economy. You might crash it into a wall but that's not stopping that's crashing. If this were the 70s before we had all this debt the effect would have been similar I think.

That's not entirely true. The looming debt has always been a problem and possible trigger for a recession but so far every country incl. the US has painted over the debt by printing money and the US always came out on top, so debt becomes relative in a global connected world. Sure camping trips and back to 60s nostalgia has a great ring to it but the world will never go back to where it once was. The lockdowns are the major reason for the economic jitters, not the debt. Debt is a consequence of the lockdowns. Sure there was plenty of debt before, but the lockdowns added much more and - worse - put people out of work - which is a much bigger risk for the economy than debt. Treasury auctions never have had a problem so far and there's no problem in the bond market on the horizon, now that may change but currently there isn't.

Actually, I think this is worse than the GD given what I've been reading / viewing. It's just (perhaps temporarily) being papered over right now. Apparently during GD ~81% of economies were in a depression where now it's ~91% (internationally)

People travel differently these days, While our parents were fine with a local camping trip - and I think we should do more local vacations as well - good luck trying to convince the wives, GFs, sons and daughters to go to Big Sur instead of Hawaii.

Ok, so you're preparing for a global depression, have cashed out of most if not all or what? The issue is that most assets have been rising with inflation/money printing far more than cash or savings. Also before Covid the Trump economy was on fire, albeit a lot of debt. The Fed was actually winding down their assets bought during the 2008 recession. I'm no fan of the Fed and think the bailouts were unfair as they picked winners and losers but the money printing, low interest and tax break definitely contribute to the best one of the best job markets ever pre-Covid. Let's see where this goes, if we can avoid another round of lockdowns we may get away with a black eye. "We" are the states that don't lock down like Commiefornia.

Republicans are more likely to support "law and order" so that the low-quality stores aren't quite as run down, etc.

Anyway, we all know the sure way of destroying the quality of life of a town or city is to enact rent control and/or demand "low cost housing" in places where the existing residents want neither.

The Dax in Germany has recovered almost to all time highs and most companies in the US and international are still reporting hefty profits. UK is doing relatively splendid since brexit. The biggest risk is turning productive workers into unemployed via lockdowns. If the US bends over to the asinine lockdown TDSers I expect European and Asian growth to outpace the US going forward. We still have a lead, albeit a small one.

All of those restaurant owners should join a few class-action law suits against California and San Franncisco for the taking of their businesses without just compensation. If the governments want to shut down businesses wholesale (not for specific violation against existing health codes by specific business) based on the faith in some quackery, there should be eminent domain payment equal to the lost revenue. Newson and Breed can be personally sued for robbery and vandalism / destruction of property via abuse of power.

Fully agreed. I try to support the local wine bar/restaurant and the Karen's are now snitching on them in local neighborhoods so that - while you're already outdoors - you are being asked to put your mask back on every time after you take a bite or sip. I said fuck off if you take my money the mask stays off - they took my money ;) Newsom and Breed should be sued to the hilt. Such hypocrisy, 20 years ago Newsom would have never supported this shit. He's now just doing the bidding for his masters.
33   mell   2020 Jul 26, 12:41pm

By the way, the Marina as the sole outlier is still buzzing and most restaurants are doing ok since they just put plenty of tables and chairs and heating systems outside and they are packed to the brim every night, no masks or social distancing. I assume since the Marina is mostly full of young adults and wealthier students/trust fund babies, they don't care about the cold going around and have enough pull to discourage snitching on their local restaurants and bars. And you know in which hood Newson operates his SF restaurants ;)

Monica still has the best mouth. I have no illusions that the Rino Republicans are great for the country, but this process already took place among most conservatives, hence the tea party and the election of Trump. The left still defaults to "but the Republicans are the bad ones!" instead of saying I'm not supporting these nutcases temporarily and go independent or forfeit my vote or even vote against my usual party line. I have no problem doing that, always vote for solutions and the rule of law, no matter which party the best candidate belongs to.

I apologize to any Jewish people who may have read my comment above. I used the phrase, "ya yitz", not knowing what it meant and changed it to "ya ding dong". Actually I sort of made it up because it went well with "ya".

I'm trying to use mostly non-offensive words to stay in line with pubah's preferences.

I might call someone a "moron" but to me that's low on the insult hierarchy.

If I recall in order of increasing offensiveness:

1. Ignoramus: You just don't know, me all the time... Ding dong might have some Asian reference for example that I don't know about.
2. Moron: worse <- I mostly stay here max
3. Imbecile: even worse
4. Idiot: must worse

I'd have to double check that, which I didn't.

Off line I'm like a 10 or 11 so... I swear a lot so what?

I saw this report last week.
Sixty percent of restaurants in the United States that were closed during the coronavirus lockdowns will not reopen, according to a survey Yelp released on Monday.

“The restaurant industry now reflects the highest total business closures, recently surpassing retail,” Yelp, the online business directory featuring customer reviews, said of its survey.

According to the National Restaurant Association, there are one million restaurant locations in the United States. As of July 10, Yelp found 26,160 total restaurant closures, an increase of 2,179 since June 15.

“Emily Catalon runs GoodFoodPittsburgh.com and has been following opening and closing trends there,” CNN reported.

“It is on the brink of devastation, honestly,” she told affiliate KDKA.

“But the restaurant business is notoriously difficult in ordinary times, too — with high competition and low profit margins, said Caleb Spivak, whose What Now Media Group covers retail and restaurants via WhatNowAtlanta.com and WhatNowLosAngeles.com,” CNN reported.

“It’s still too early to say for some of them why they permanently closed,” Spivak told CNN. “A lot of these restaurants were already struggling.”
