59 and under are allowed in.

Why not 49? Or maybe we should base societal exclusion on weight or BMI? Maybe skin color?

Liberty for all.

Maybe they can host covid-19 immune swinger parties for the recovered. Could be a good business venture.

That's one way to revitalize the cruise industry.

Motto could be: "Cruise, booze, and cooze."

From news

The USA topped 1,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day for the first time Wednesday, a daily death toll more than double that of two of America's most deadly illnesses – lung cancer and the flu. Some researchers say the daily death toll could more than double – to 2,200 or more – by mid-April. That figure would eclipse heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer with about 1,772 deaths per day, according to the CDC.

This is a situation where having Trump as a leader works against us.

Can you think of a situation where you think Trump as a leader is working for us?

Or do you think he is working for the Russians and his own personal interest and has no care for the citizens of the USA?

People should take a lesson from this about the advantages of capitalism. I went over to Walmart to see if they had any chicken salad sandwiches which I had failed to buy several days earlier, then they were out of for a couple of days. They had a whole row of fresh sandwiches, and I saw people with toilet tissue in their baskets. I went over to the often bare isle and they were parceling out eight packs of 1,000 sheet rolls of Great Value tissue for $4.97. No central planner told them to do that, someone is realizing a profit on every one of those rolls and sandwiches and thank goodness for it. If we were operating under socialism as Bernie and company prefer, we'd already be like Venezuela.

It actually doesnt do well on food, it dies quickly, especially in liquid or gooey substances (which transport it into the stomach to die) but the virus - being sticky itself - survives much better on the packaging.

May is the grand reopening, unless hundreds of thousands start dying from this flu.

Lot's of motivated reasoning.
Admitting the contagion is contained, what would stop it from starting spreading again as soon as people start congregating?

I think we can restart some activities (retail, manufacturing) in 2 months provided we have massive number of masks and testing.

But everything that requires large/dense groups is closed until vaccine: (cinemas, cafes, restaurants, hotels, concerts, sporting events, conferences, probably schools, etc...) .
24   marcus   2020 Apr 4, 3:57pm

:
Wouldn't that depend on estimates of active cases versus percentage estimates of population that is then immune ? With enough testing, the modelers can project where we are at at that time. Perhaps the resulting slow growth projections at that time will be considered tolerable (or maybe not).

This is a really good instance of a time when politics and wishful thinking need to be taken out of the analyses. Perhaps a valuable lesson in these times of excessive bullshit and fake news. The truth is that really good analysis can be done, and I don't mean by me or other arm chair quarterbacks on this forum, twitter and such.
25   Bd6r   2020 Apr 4, 3:57pm

We should have followed the Swedish course of action and never closed anything except extremely large venues. I was driving around our city yesterday and construction workers are congregating in yuuge crowds, illegals are still in ever increasing and desperate crowds under Hwy 59, homeless congregate as well, basically it is only the middle class and certain types of businesses being hit. Other businesses are exempted becuase they have bought off city leadership or closing them will make population of barrios revolt. This is not a containment, it is a joke so that city leaders can say that we did something so your grandma dying is not our fault.
26   Bd6r   2020 Apr 4, 3:58pm

About vaccine, corona appears to mutate very fast. I doubt we will get a general vaccine. Which means we need "herd immunity", and that can be obtained either in a relatively short time not ruining economy, or it can be stretched out for a year until we live in caves after economy collapses.

This CV has hardly mutated at all so far, they don't mutate fast it's just over the many years many different strains have evolved. Most of these strains are well known though. But I agree that meds and herd immunity are more important than waiting for a vaccine.

I'm still hopeful. This is a situation where having Trump as a leader works against us. Because everyone, even his supporters know how greedy and narcissistic he is. We know all the stories about his past (well some of us do). We know how much he cares about the economy relative to HOW IT EFFECTS HIM. I'm not saying any other leader wouldn't be just as aware of that.

Kind of like Educators and Admins, and many Federal and State Workers. Thy continue to collect their full salary, which allows them to be Anti-Trump and hope for an economic disaster to immanentize the eschaton.

Now, if this goes beyond April 15th, they should all be furloughed until school opens or the economy re-opens or both. Why should 100% of State Health Officials checking restaurants, bars, barber shops, etc. be getting 100% of pay when 90% of those are closed?

It's absolutely ridiculous that one group should continue to get paid in full for no or little work, while tens of millions are out of work entirely. Nobody should be that privileged in a national emergency.

That way they have skin in the game, and their TDS will be tempered by economic realities like the vast majority in the Private Sector.

They need to check their EduPrivilege!

Oh the push back is coming. At minimum a government worker collecting full pay AND barely or not working at all shouldn't get a stimulus check. Anyone collecting a government pension should get nothing from this. If you get social security, filed taxes and there's no employment listed on your taxes, no stimulus.

If UE claims top 20M total (10M next week basically) then the economy opens back up May 1st 100%. If this is a war.... I'm willing to take the risk. If you can't take the risk, stay home and ask for assistance. I saw a news clip of maybe up to 100 people in a hospital cheering on a CV-19 "survivor" being released from the hospital. I though they were fucking overwhelmed? I'll try to find the clip.

People should be doing screen grabs of this stuff and posting it here before it all disappears. Didn't someone start a thread on this already here? If not we should. Looking for said clip now.

Just because a virus mutates doesn't mean the vaccine becomes totally ineffective. The flu vaccine often only has partial protection (since there are so many strains) and can make cases less severe. It's all about managing the number of people needing to be hospitalized. Once we have that under control maybe as a combo of vaccine and proven meds there's no reason for any sort of lockdown just because we have one more cold/flu/pneumonia virus and deprive people of their livelihood and right to free assembly.

Before anyone says anything, I have no doubt that you are. Online stuff is actually time consuming. I’m also aware even if teachers aren’t directly doing that, there’s other areas many are working in.

There’s people slacking where I work and most are in management. It’s under the guise of work at home, but they really aren’t doing shit. It’s an embarrassment really as the lower level workers are stuck doing all the crap and the mgmt employees should be too.

But I don’t think there’s too many teachers in LA just screwing around doing nothing.

The flu vaccine is special in that it has to be redone every year. This is not the case for most other viruses. Often you just need a booster shot after a few years.

There are only 2 ways to get to herd immunity: either a vaccine, or 75% of the population get the disease, which even spread over a year would destroy the healthcare system (1 yr is too short) and the economy (1 yr is too long).

I personally don't hate teachers. I got my degree and wanted to be a high school history teacher. I then realized I can't stand kids. Oh well, you live you learn. I know it's tougher work than most realize, but it's very much easier work than most degreed professions. My mom was a 5th grade teacher and said as much. So I'm not talking out my ass. I know the teacher "locker room" talk as my mom is pretty candid about it.

10M jobless claims in 2 weeks isn't just from restaurants though. The stay at home work layoffs start coming this week and will accelerate until the end of the month. There's almost no chance a teacher gets their pay cut or laid off. It's part of a government approved budget where they've likely already received the tax dollars for the fiscal year. They HAVE to spend the money in most cases. I'm on an elected board and that's how it works in IL unless it's an hourly employee. Salaried employees will get their $$ no matter what.

If a school shuts down for say the last month of May (at least here in IL). Why, as a taxpayer, should we be paying teachers? On the backside of this, if there's a loss in property values, tax revenue will decrease and the schools will beg for more money. They could have just laid the teachers off and had them collect UE benefits just like the rest of the country has to. That's the main point in this.

Government workers have a shield around them. They do some hard work for sure, but if they're sitting on their ass, stop paying them. It makes no sense. Sorry for the novel, just wanted to give some perspective that it's not hate, it's just kind of stupid to be paying certain gov workers if they're not doing anything.

@WookieMan this seems like an excellent idea.

It's extreme and must absolutely be temporary, but I don't know how else to stop the deaths until there is a vax. Having hours for old people doesn't stop the spread of this either. You just don't know if they had some dipshit family member visit them that was infected. Or a store clerk is sneezing all over the Depends box with a minor case of it.

And I also just thought of it this way. I'm advocating to pay more in future taxes to keep these people alive. I think that's a pretty noble thing. All they have to do is just stay the fuck home. My mom and mother in law haven't left the house all but 1 time each I think since March 15.

In most cases it's old people killing old people as well. Specifically sick old people killing old doctors and nurses... Check this one out: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/927976?src=soc_fb_share&fbclid=IwAR3X1y4qWkJ2REsNl2EwjsROZoW3q1UI5e1K_QQtxHJRUUFYAOhzkJYtHOk

What are bartenders, waitresses, bank cashiers (many banks have closed their lobbies entirely, like Wells Fargo), clothing store employees, the lunchlady at the Cafeteria in the Midstate Insurance Building, the Yoga/Zumba Instructor at the Gym, the receptionist at the Insure-your-Jalopy Insurance Offic, etc. doing? I guarantee most of the laid off aren't working at home because their jobs don't involve it. You can't virtually wait tables or take cash deposits from your apartment.

Macy's let off 130,000 employees almost immediately (though I'm sure that wasn't entirely COVID-19 related).

I also guarantee you most Code Inspectors, Health Inspectors, shut down Community Center Employees, e, etc. are drawing full pay with little if any work from home.

60% of US Jobs are Hourly. ~40% are low wage jobs within 10%-20% of the minimum wage. The Median US wage is a bit over ~$10/hour
https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/201911_Brookings-Metro_Pressrelease_lowwageworkforce.pdf

I have heard of SOME teachers working at home, zooming with students 3x a week. But I've heard it's mostly to let their students chat with their classmates for "Social Outlet" crap. With School cancelled in March in many places, many aren't doing anything since about 1/2 the semester was lost and be made up when school opens. What would a science teacher or phys ed teacher be doing?
