Many of whom are now likely to die from other reasons because of all this bull shit. Quarantine a smaller percentage of the population, the old or those with immune deficiencies, that has minimal effect on the overall population. It's not complicated. It's a fucking virus.... it's going to spread regardless of what we're doing now. Might slow it down, but it's doesn't just go away because we shut down civilization.

Given the response in the quote above my guess is you have respiratory issues, are old or are concerned about family with that stuff. I feel for those people, but my point is we could get through this with 30% of people making sacrifices instead of 100%. Anyone under 50 shouldn't see anyone over 50+ right now. Probably for 2 months regardless of any action taken by governments. So don't. If you're over 50-60, don't leave the fucking house. And if you do, understand that your life is at risk. This statistically is not killing those under 60. Something like 70% of the population is 99.8% safe from this virus. Jesus, the boomer hate out there is out of hand. Several of us have posted links to good articles and analysis. It's not about what you say at all.

What it's about first and foremost is not overwhelming our healthcare system. Not getting to the point that they have to choose who to let die and totally stress out the system. In a couple months the flu season will have ended freeing up capacity in ICUs and for vetilators etc. Even Trump gets this.

But secondly it's about the fact that this is new and different and we don't really know what the numbers would grow to if we don't try to "flatten the curve" as they say. Do you think 100 million is impossible ? The experts don't think it's impossible. This is different than flu, which people are vaccinated for.

What you seem to miss is that even if people under 50 don't often die they still can catch it and exponentially increase the number infected, increasing the exposure to all the people that are old, or with compromised immune systems or conditions that make them more vulnerable.

I don't have a guess of percentage. Remember that however much the economy has been pumped up by Trump, a shit ton of people are still working multiple jobs just to keep the lights on and have a place to live. If you think local unemployment offices are going to process the flood of people that are about to come, you're crazy. You clearly haven't been unemployed or know anyone that has. You don't just push a button and start getting a check every week....

And back to the multiple job thing. Those people won't qualify for unemployment if they're an on the books employee. But they won't pay the rent because they needed that 2nd job. The restaurant owner is eating a weeks worth of food and now not buying next weeks. What happens to the food supplier? There's talk of this going into fucking June! The safety net money isn't there. It will have to be printed. Just read an article that Mitt Romney is suggesting a $1k payment to all adults. A Republican is suggesting this! This is as fucking real as it gets.

I believe you work for the government. My wife gets contracts from the government. We're likely okay. But this is more serious than you think.

You really think this is just three weeks? School is done for the spring this year. I don't think my kids go back. I'd bet a small amount of money on that. Rich mother fuckers like NBA owners DON'T shut down until June or July for no reason. There is information that we don't have. Remember the NBA is huge in China. The playoffs are where they make their $$$ outside of merchandise and ticket sales.

So locking everyone up works better??? That's where we're going. Older people need to be vigilant and I'm sticking to my guns on this. They need to be quarantined in their homes at minimum. Fine them if they leave. It's harsh and we're not going to agree obviously. All the data is showing that it's exclusively old people dying, no different than the flu, except that actually kills kids... I'm actually okay with 60+ people getting $2k/mo or something from the government to keep them inside.

Until a vaccine is made for this, older people need to stay inside. We can't just shut down the largest economy in the world though because nursing home patients are dying from basically the flu. Again, it's not complicated. Offer them assistance and tell them to stay the fuck home.

No. But I'm looking forward to when more testing has been done, and not just of people with symptoms. The CDC and W.H.O will eventually have a better understanding of this.

And sure even in two weeks. the number of cases in the U.S., even if only cases of people that are very ill will tell us a lot. It won't be over by any stretch, but we may have an idea of whether this social distancing was necessary or not, and we might be albe to see a slow down by then. But it will have been necessary anyway, becasue of what we don't know at this point.

It's called flattening the curve. It has to do with the total number of people that get the virus as well as how soon, which as far as people know might be in the hundreds of millions in the US alone. Hopefully not.
