I think many people know that they can't personally go toe to toe in a political discussion/debate with someone whose even slightly more knowledgeable than them. But, that doesn't make them wrong. I think many people let the experts debate, and they watch the experts debate, and then choose a side. I'm not saying its ideal, but it is what it is, as people have varying interest and time commitments to politics.

I know there's many people who could debate with me, and they could take ANY stance/side of a topic, and then proceed to destroy me and make me look foolish in a discussion. But, that doesn't make their stance correct, not would it be likely to change my mind, as politics are so complicated and subjective such that a few quick logical arguments don't truly explore and decide things.

I think discussion is good, but you're probably viewed as being confrontational, or out to prove them wrong. Nobody likes when people come up to them and more or less say "I'm right and you're wrong", challenging their decisions & opinions, even if the persuasion is logical. It's a great way to upset people.

Except I wasn't being confrontational. I didn't even take sides. I told her I disliked both candidates (when the election headlines came across our television screen at work) and gave a 2 second summary of why I disliked BOTH of them.

She said she liked Abrams.

All I did was ask why she liked Abrams. Asking someone why they support a candidate should not be offensive, although the left often interprets it that way.

A simple answer of "I don't know where they stand, but I like the candidate because of this" would suffice. But to get all pissed off about it is stupid.

If you're voting for someone, at least know a little bit of what they stand for - OR - why you are voting against the other party.

Because of my experience with her and several other co-workers, I have come to the conclusion that the left is unable to think for themselves and simple regurgitates news headlines. The #NPC movement describes the large majority of leftists I've run into perfectly.

I'd actually be on board with this. But could be difficult for a few candidate, for example IL-D8 winner Raja Krishnamoorthi. Tallying votes also would be tough as even most Americans probably couldn't even write in Paul Ryan correctly if they had to. If they spell it wrong does it still count?

But if you can come in with a cheat sheet, then that might be better. But then the parties would just mail out their own cheat sheets for people to bring to the polls and they'd vote straight party lines anyway.

Funny. I just want people to prove they are actually citizens and carry an ID to vote. But somehow that’s racist and a spelling test is much more feasible somehow.

I'm cool with ID's all day. I literally have 4 form of government approved ID to identify myself. Not hard to get.

I like the write in idea because you have to actually know who the fuck you're voting for. I'd guess at least 6 out of 10 times it's a straight party line vote and the people don't really even know what they're voting for.

Not everyone of course, but I'm guessing most don't even know the positions of their state representative. Who will likely have more impact on them then versus the federal government. I know my state reps and governor are probably going to raise my state income taxes to the tune of 50-75% higher after a recent 30% increase. I have a whole hell of a lot more influence over those types of elections versus the federal level. Problem here in IL is the ballots and straight affiliation voting for one party or the other. With zero knowledge of the actual candidates.

It's like going to a restaurant and you can choose a hamburger or a cheeseburger. There are other ingredients on the burger, but the menu is only telling you if it has cheese or not. The other ingredients are policy stances and they're not listed on the menu. That's how our current ballots function.

Yeah I mentioned this many times a while ago. He was the darling of mainstream TV and actually helped blacks and Jews already way back then. Never a racist, just money motivated which was - and maybe still is - the essence of the US. A simple party switch and targeting the various threats to the success of capitalism looming within the left and suddenly he's literally hitler. Can't make this shit up.
