According to the Census Bureau, the typical household income was $51,296 in 1999. By 2009, that figure dropped to $50,303.
In other words, household income is falling and the average figures are actually high for many families. The median income for Black households in 2009 was just $34,218 while Hispanic households took in $37,913.
