My mother passed away this last October and I am in the process of transferring her holdings into my name. She has stock in Lilly and National Western Life Ins., if I sold them today, probably worth about $50,000 total. These were stocks my dad bought many decades ago. I really don't know sh*t about investing so I'm not sure what questions I should be asking myself to determine if I should just hold on to them or let them go. Any feedback would be great. I'm a 47 y.o. single female, no mortgage or rent, my brother and I just inherited the rental property that my dad bought back in '63. I live in this property and live off the income. I have health issues and cannot work f/t so this property is a blessing. We bring in about $10,000 a month.

Thank you, that makes sense. Why are annuities bad? I'm not interested in them, just wondering what the deal is with them.

No plans to sell our bldg., it wouldn't make sense. It provides a home for me and it produces income. Luckily, it is in a very desirable area too.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer my post, I appreciate it!

SF ace says

The great thing about the internet is what takes 5 years to learn takes just three months. To help you, you need to help yourself first. It seems like you don’t even know what you are holding beside it’s worth 50K if sold today.
It seems like your parents secured your life but taught you little.
LLY is a widely held dividend monster.

National western is a little known insurance company that is thinly traded. With life insurance companies, prepaid premiums are invested.
Remember to write down what is your step up basis of the equity from the inheritance.
They taught me little?

My poor dad did the best he could. Our mom was mentally ill and I had to care for her. I need advice not criticism, it's been difficult.

Well, I'm not sure what that medicine would be! I'm in better shape right now than anyone else I know, and we are not selling our property.

...and p.s. SF Ace, does it make you feel better to be so smug?

Well, depends on how you define financial security. Thanks, but you were of little help with your vagueness.
