I've often thought about running for public office but to date have never put my hat in the ring. Lately, I've had several people come up to me and encourage me to run. It's too late to get on the ballot for this election cycle but if so want to make a run in 2026 or 2027 best if I start planning now. Am I crazy for even entertaining the idea?

Do it.

At the very least you will learn a lot that you can teach to us and others.

The big question for me is whether or not it's possible to get elected without selling out for campaign cash. Trump did it, but he's a billionaire. And maybe he did sell out to Pfizer. He still hasn't banned their jabs in spite of all the evidence that they are dangerous and defective.

What position? I'm elected but is a very minor position in a small town.

If you have kids leverage that for signatures to get on the ballot. First hurdle. If you need 1k plus signatures bring a clipboard to kids sports if you have any. The other parents will just sign because they know your kid or name even randoms. If you have to go beyond that it becomes a bit of a pain in the ass. Work, but you have to make sure the signatures are in your area.

That's why I ask position and signatures needed. I see NYC in the username and assume a large population. You might have to go door to door. Usually depends on the votes of the last election and you need to get a certain percentage of that total.

For me it was 4... lol. If it's a city position or county you're looking at a lot of signatures. Our school board needs 150 signatures and it's 3k people.

As much as I'd love to throw in for our congressional seat, if I do this I'll start small...
Local board. Some of the people who have approached me about running have experience in local politics and know the system.

If I plant myself in front of the local post office for a few weekends I should be able to get enough to get on the ballot. Plus people I know through church, etc. I'm at the point in my life where whenever I go out to the store I run into at least one or two people I know. Not all may agree with my politics, which is fine. I speak my mind but try to be diplomatic about it.

I may be forced to run on a party line to have the best chance of success. The independent line only gets you so far in these parts.

Plan would be to get 2x to 3x the minimum since some will be contested and possibly thrown out. They play dirty pool. If I do this I'm going ineyes wide open.

Yep, expect to be charged with a crime and/or sued for some bizarre reason.

Oh Joy. It's crap like this that gives me pause, but once your a quasi public figure all sorts of strange stuff can go down.

You'll have to shut down social media if you're active on that. Only government info on the personal account depending on position. Patnet you can get away with if you used a burner email.

Also depending on the position, people will just come after you. We had a couple show up to our meeting and bitched for 15 minutes we don't do the pledge before meetings. I was just smirking the whole time. I'm an elected official.... I've fucking pledged more than you have. I love the country, but I'm an adult, I don't need to recite something every meeting.

It's rewarding though when you do actual good. Not all government bodies do. There are manipulative people with agendas to help family and friends. Keep those people at a distance because they'll ask for things or at least don't talk about your position. We have a $2M project going on and all the local contractors are coming out of the woodwork to try and bid on stuff.
