Salvation Army and Habitat are using a "Restock" system and trying to charge you over $100 to donate a couch.

I betcha "Restock" is owned by former "Charity" execs/consultants who are padding their pockets charging for pickup.

Anybody got any alternatives?

Nobody want's someone's discards. Give it value and put it out by the road with a sign for $50, someone will either stop and buy it, haggle with you, or steal it.
Most everything in a thrift store was slated to be thrown away. They give it value for people looking for a deal, but not dig in the trash.

I hate post-Obama America. Now thrift stores don't want to take free lightly used furniture they can sell or give.

To be donated with a perfectly functional toaster (superfluous with my air fryer) and a convection oven/dehydrator (my new XL air fryer does that too).

Oh well.

Goodwill sucks ass. The really good stuff they ebay or sell it in other venues where it can fetch more money than people expect in a thrift store.
The last few Goodwill stores I went into, looked like furniture and household items that renters left behind, so landlords donated it to Goodwill. Perhaps Goodwill caught on, and realized Landlords were using them as free occupancy removal method. Rather than paying a couple guys a couple hundred each, renting a truck and paying hundreds at the dump.

I used to find items at thrift stores all the time, that I thought were worth buying. There was nothing in the last two stores I looked in.
Even the clothes there looked black people's clothes they would have worn in the 70's. Like old black people died and they hauled it off to Goodwill.

There's still deals on kid's clothes, but I buy used off Ebay.

Why pay $300 for new leather shoes when you can get ditto in your exact size that some dude brought and wore 3 times for $50+shipping. The shit at most thrift places looks like payless that some store clerk kid wore for a few months, never polished or took care of, and they want $20 for it.

Some of the Goodwills are ridiculous, why I stopped going. Like White shirts with red stains where the tag clearly indicates they were waiter's uniforms. Some restuarant just dumped the whole lot of their old uniforms and as you say, Goodwill probably sold the decent ones in good shape online.

Ditto for cheap art, too. It's dogs playing poker & smoking cigars pictures and Elvis shit from QVC grandma-that-passed away brought from the TV in the 90s.

Around here they don't even accept furniture anymore. And couple of years before that even tiny scratch was enough for a piece of furniture to be rejected. Everybody's rich now and doesn't need your used couch!

Well, I put in this thing for some site that works with multiple donation services. Guess I can't be rid of it prior to the weekend and cross off that box.

But if they pull the "It's missing that ornamental button on the back cushion" (my kids ripped it off, but otherwise it's pristine)" shit, they ain't getting the toaster and convection oven. I'll take that myself to a charity or sell it on craigslist. No choosy beggar - schnorrers. I don't need help carrying two tabletop appliances to the car, it's the loveseat I can't fit in it or I'd DIY with this bullshit.

Agree, put it on the street. People will nickle, dime and scam you unless you get lucky, not worth the time. Also fuck these "non-profit" stores charging for donations, all leftoid grifting machines. People in need usually pick up free stuff very quickly

Around here if you put something out to the curb that has any metal value in it at all, it will be gone in less than ten minutes.
Finally got around to putting the cabinets and counter top in our kitchen remodel. We had the old fridge a Samsung behemoth side by side, that survived the fire, with only the plastic trim around the top door seeming to melt a little. The wife wanted a new fridge, we have been using it in the kitchen moving it around as we worked. There's a kitchenette on the other side of the house we have been using, that has a much smaller fridge. I was thinking that ugly half melted POS would sit out there until bulk pickup. But by the time I set the last drawer tray out, it was gone. But I noticed they wont take furniture unless you yard sell it. People stop and buy old side tables, but they wont scavenge them, even if they are comparable in appearance.

Yeah, gonna put it on the street. Humane Society called me, they'd pick up - a week into January. Oh, and then it's gotta be on the first floor anyway, their drivers won't load, even if you offer to help, from the 2nd floor.

Looks like I'll have some fun dragging the thing out to the trash

Take it to the dump.

the Goodwill stores in St Petersburg Florida and surrounding areas are typically "Full" of clothes and stuff. There is a HUGE facility in St Petes on Gandy Blvd that sell by the Pound... and that place is a zoo.
Florida is the last place before heaven... and when they Pass Away, thekids just donate te whole house, or Double Wide to them.
Even the Habitat store... aka Restore, was a regional facility. Another huge Warehouse where they would receive the insides of a house... from Kitchen cabinets, stove, washer, dryer, fridge, hot water heater, plumbing, electrical.etc.etc.
I loved that store, and got real chummy with the workers. then something happened, and small stores closed and moved their inventory to this regional center on Ulmerton and 49th... I totally Agree with the comment about the "Corporate Charity Execs". a snobby bunch at that ulmerton store.
I bought "Flat-Pack Shaker kitchen cabinets"... just stacks of them.
Once new management came in, all the cool people left or got canned. Some of the working staff were Doing time for "Community Service"... things are so different now once Covid Hit. I believe you can say that once Covid hit, Everything changed.

P.S. Pat... thanks for the Bumper stickers &:^)---<

Let it fall of the truck... Give it a day and most the time it will be gone. I have a neighbor/buddy that is kind of a hoarder. He was a locator for utilities but now works for a muni. He was on the road a lot and would just pick up shit on garbage day all the time. He's found some pretty pricy stuff that people thought was trash. Not my jam, but considering it was in the process of work and getting paid, not a bad little side gig grabbing other people's trash.

The Goodwills I stop at from time to time are good for...

1. T-shirts
2. Picture frames
3. Wood furniture
4. Halloween costumes
5. DVD movies

I believe Goodwill will take any unbroken all wood furniture.

The issue there is that furniture takes up a lot of space, which is why they hate it.

There's good $$ to be made in used furniture. Especially if it's free. New furniture is so expensive, it's financed.
