Theories so far:

1. Prigozhin/Wagner had a mutiny over plans to incorporate the organization into the Russian Military. I suspect individual members have motivation in that after their term of service, they would be able to command relatively high pay around the world; whereas if incorporated into the Russian Army they'd have a less generous enlistment package.

2. Prigozhin and Putin are working together and/or:
2a. Prigozhin took Western Money and notified Putin; Putin and Prigozhin split the money while the latter ran a fake temporary mutiny. Prigozhin will be reprimanded and Putin will grudgingly acknowledge his "Service" and reduce penalty from death to exile (but of course Prigozhin will keep his share).
2b. Prigozhin ran a self-coup for Putin to flush out Western Sympathizers/Disloyal Officials
