What if (when) the virus mutates and the vaccine stops working?

The flu vaccine is special in that it has to be redone every year. This is not the case for most other viruses. Often you just need a booster shot after a few years.

There are only 2 ways to get to herd immunity: either a vaccine, or 75% of the population get the disease, which even spread over a year would destroy the healthcare system (1 yr is too short) and the economy (1 yr is too long).

@WookieMan this seems like an excellent idea.

Why is it any different than the millions in the private sector that are working from home, you know, other than the fact that you hate us.

I personally don't hate teachers. I got my degree and wanted to be a high school history teacher. I then realized I can't stand kids. Oh well, you live you learn. I know it's tougher work than most realize, but it's very much easier work than most degreed professions. My mom was a 5th grade teacher and said as much. So I'm not talking out my ass. I know the teacher "locker room" talk as my mom is pretty candid about it.

10M jobless claims in 2 weeks isn't just from restaurants though. The stay at home work layoffs start coming this week and will accelerate until the end of the month. There's almost no chance a teacher gets their pay cut or laid off. It's part of a government approved budget where they've likely already received the tax dollars for the fiscal year. They HAVE to spend the money in most cases. I'm on an elected board and that's how it works in IL unless it's an hourly employee. Salaried employees will get their $$ no matter what.

If a school shuts down for say the last month of May (at least here in IL). Why, as a taxpayer, should we be paying teachers? On the backside of this, if there's a loss in property values, tax revenue will decrease and the schools will beg for more money. They could have just laid the teachers off and had them collect UE benefits just like the rest of the country has to. That's the main point in this.

Government workers have a shield around them. They do some hard work for sure, but if they're sitting on their ass, stop paying them. It makes no sense. Sorry for the novel, just wanted to give some perspective that it's not hate, it's just kind of stupid to be paying certain gov workers if they're not doing anything.

@WookieMan this seems like an excellent idea.

It's extreme and must absolutely be temporary, but I don't know how else to stop the deaths until there is a vax. Having hours for old people doesn't stop the spread of this either. You just don't know if they had some dipshit family member visit them that was infected. Or a store clerk is sneezing all over the Depends box with a minor case of it.

And I also just thought of it this way. I'm advocating to pay more in future taxes to keep these people alive. I think that's a pretty noble thing. All they have to do is just stay the fuck home. My mom and mother in law haven't left the house all but 1 time each I think since March 15.

In most cases it's old people killing old people as well. Specifically sick old people killing old doctors and nurses... Check this one out: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/927976?src=soc_fb_share&fbclid=IwAR3X1y4qWkJ2REsNl2EwjsROZoW3q1UI5e1K_QQtxHJRUUFYAOhzkJYtHOk

Also a good question. I can say that traffic is lighter then a federal holiday.

According to you it's 1 - (vast majority)

I don't know about that. But it's definitely a lot.

What are bartenders, waitresses, bank cashiers (many banks have closed their lobbies entirely, like Wells Fargo), clothing store employees, the lunchlady at the Cafeteria in the Midstate Insurance Building, the Yoga/Zumba Instructor at the Gym, the receptionist at the Insure-your-Jalopy Insurance Offic, etc. doing? I guarantee most of the laid off aren't working at home because their jobs don't involve it. You can't virtually wait tables or take cash deposits from your apartment.

Macy's let off 130,000 employees almost immediately (though I'm sure that wasn't entirely COVID-19 related).

I also guarantee you most Code Inspectors, Health Inspectors, shut down Community Center Employees, e, etc. are drawing full pay with little if any work from home.

60% of US Jobs are Hourly. ~40% are low wage jobs within 10%-20% of the minimum wage. The Median US wage is a bit over ~$10/hour
https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/201911_Brookings-Metro_Pressrelease_lowwageworkforce.pdf

I have heard of SOME teachers working at home, zooming with students 3x a week. But I've heard it's mostly to let their students chat with their classmates for "Social Outlet" crap. With School cancelled in March in many places, many aren't doing anything since about 1/2 the semester was lost and be made up when school opens. What would a science teacher or phys ed teacher be doing?

Kind of like Educators and Admins, and many Federal and State Workers. Thy continue to collect their full salary, which allows them to be Anti-Trump and hope for an economic disaster to immanentize the eschaton.

Now, if this goes beyond April 15th, they should all be furloughed until school opens or the economy re-opens or both. Why should 100% of State Health Officials checking restaurants, bars, barber shops, etc. be getting 100% of pay when 90% of those are closed?

It's absolutely ridiculous that one group should continue to get paid in full for no or little work, while tens of millions are out of work entirely. Nobody should be that privileged in a national emergency.

That way they have skin in the game, and their TDS will be tempered by economic realities like the vast majority in the Private Sector.

They need to check their EduPrivilege!

Just move classes to June or July and shut down schools in April. Everyone is happy - educators get paid, students learn, and taxpayers do not get hosed...

May 1st. Either way, active cases will be down by then and it can be done in steps. Plus sommer is upon us which will further depress cases.

And even Svatcheem Junior is talking about Reopening slowly by slowly adding to the number of essential workers; he'll be meeting with other Northeast Governors later today.

Houston: ca. 2.4 million inhabitants + realistically a few hundred thousand illegals

Corona results: 35 dead, including 1!!!! without underlying health issues, the guy was 70. This is as of 4-5 days ago, please see below.
So, it was worth shutting down the whole damned city, making it go broke, and inconveniencing everything because in 2 months of panic 1!!!!!!!! healthy person died, and without shutdowns if would be 2 or 3??? We have a murder per day, and a person killed in car crashes every day, these victims are healthy!

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- During Friday's briefing on the city's COVID-19 response, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the first COVID-19 death in the City of Houston with no underlying health issues.
Turner said the individual was a white man in his 70s who died on April 12.

The city of Houston is now reporting an additional 74 new cases, bringing the total to 3,120. The death toll climbed to 35.

Turner also briefly spoke about the city's budget deficit due to COVID-19. He said Houston's deficit would be between $170 and $200 million, including a sales tax reduction of $100 million.

"It would be the worst deficit that the city has faced," Turner said. "This one will be worse than the city's deficit in 2016."

Being at 92% of the life expectancy for men could be considered an underlying health issue.

Dude, in sales tax states it's going to be a blood bath. I don't know Houston at all, but since most places pay sales taxes monthly, we won't know until they're paid in May. March was a cut back in some places, but April was shut down. That money is gone. I think the sales tax funds being substantially short of the estimates is going to wake some people up.

Yes, when government officials start to realize that they have cut into the money that pays their own salaries, and for no good reason, this madness will stop.

That could take a while though. They still seem drunk on their newfound power. The hangover will be rough on them too, thank God.

Illinois will just jack up your property tax again to make up for the short fall.

God knows that the Democrat and unions running your State will NEVER ask any sacrifice from government workers and their obscene pension system.

Signatures are being counted as we speak. At this point, very likely that it passes (if it gets the required signatures) as state will be desperate for money come November. Doesn't affect personal residence or smaller rentals.

INCREASES FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICES BY CHANGING TAX ASSESSMENT OF COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. - (Random Sample Count 4/27/2020 (PDF))
Summary Date: 10/17/19 | Circulation Deadline: 04/14/20 | Signatures Required: 997,139
Proponent(s): Anthony Thigpenn, Benjamin McBride, Carol Moon Goldberg
Increases funding for K-12 public schools, community colleges, and local governments by requiring that commercial and industrial real property be taxed based on current market value. Exempts from this change: residential properties; agricultural properties; and owners of commercial and industrial properties with combined value of $3 million or less. Increased education funding will supplement existing school funding guarantees. Exempts small businesses from personal property tax; for other businesses, exempts $500,000 worth of personal property. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Net increase in annual property tax revenues of $7.5 billion to $12 billion in most years, depending on the strength of real estate markets. After backfilling state income tax losses related to the measure and paying for county administrative costs, the remaining $6.5 billion to $11.5 billion would be allocated to schools (40 percent) and other local governments (60 percent). You're likely correct. Sales taxes generally cannot be made up if lost and the only place locally it can be made up is property taxes or some new tax/borrowing. I'm fortunately one of the few in the low 4 figure property tax realm in IL. Most everyone I know is pushing, if not already into 5 figures. These are modest homes too.

We are on the precipice of popular revolt. It’s simmering right now, as the people grow more and more frustrated and angry. This weekend expect more matches and rallies and demonstrations, especially in states like California which have indicated long term repression of normal activity. Already certain businesses with little to lose are reopening. What can the state do? Fine them? Good luck collecting from a business that is going to be shuttered anyway.
