Wuhan Virus is spreading, generating more headlines, greater anxiety and paranoia, and, of course, cancellations and closings. It’s high time to ask a critical question: Could our reaction to the fear of COVID-19 do more harm than the virus itself? ...

A good deal of this panic is the result of the nigh constant and almost exclusively apocalyptic coverage in the news. Just as the left-leaning media like to hype up the number of gun deaths – the majority of which are suicides – but ignore medical mistakes, as if doctors don’t kill far more Americans than firearms, they’re now using Coronavirus as a way to target President Trump. See how terribly he’s handling this deadly pandemic? Do you really want to vote this guy back into office for a second term? It’s selective outrage: The media choose to highlight the issues that further the leftist agenda. ...

Coronavirus is not flu, no matter how many times the two are compared. The reproduction number is about twice as high for COVID-19, meaning that the average sick person is expected to infect twice as many people as they would with influenza. That aside, while the Coronavirus is believed to have a much deadlier potential than the seasonal flu, that doesn’t change the fact that COVID-19 has claimed — according to the CDC as of March 16 — 6,606 lives globally, with 41 of those being in the United States.

The flu season is still in full swing, and the CDC doesn’t like to give exact numbers because not all cases are known, but so far America has lost between 22,000 and 55,000 to influenza since October of last year. Coronavirus has a lot of catching up to do if it’s going to live up to the hype that it’s more dangerous than seasonal flu...

When the dust settles, how many people will be left without a job, a ride, or even a home? When it’s all said and done, the 2019-2020 Coronavirus death toll will almost certainly be just a drop in the bucket compared to boring old influenza. This won’t make the books as one of the greatest plagues in history, but the economic collapse caused by our panic just might.

A white person being called "racist" is the same level of insult as a black person being called "nigger".

What would a black person do in that case?

That is exactly what a white person should do.

I think we're all racist.

I miss simpler times on Patrick.net, when we could all enjoy Patricks posts about black crime statistics, and how blacks really do commit more violent crime than white folks.

Patrick gets it. Being obsessed with spreading the truth isn't racism. I mean the topic might be race, and if someone feels that too many people aren't well enough informed about really true differences in races, that's not racism.

Wanting to think a lot about race doesn't make someone a racist. What if your main thought about race is how too many people are calling members of your own race racist ? That's certainly not racism. I don't know why some white folks aren't more obsessed with this. They must actually be the racists.

Here is a quiz- A single lily pad in the pond spawns a new lily every day and each spawned lily also gets to spawn a new lily everyday. It takes the 100 days to fill the whole pond. So how many days does it take to fill approximately 3-4% of the pond.

100 days to fill 1/1 of the pond
99 days to fill 1/2 the pond
98 days to fill 1/4 of the pond
97 days to fill 1/8 of the pond
96 days to fill 1/16 of the pond
95 days to fill 1/32 of the pond

1/32 = 3.125% so 95 days.

That must be a huge pond as well. In 100 days, there would be 2^100 lily pads which works out to 1.26765060023e30. The Earth only has 196,936,994 mi² of surface area, converting that to square feet is 196,936,994 5280 5280 = 5,490,288,293,529,600 square feet. even fitting 100 lilly pads in a square foot wouldn't be enough. Hell, I think if you ever had an organism that reproduced at 1 per day and didn't die off pretty quickly, you'd have a black hole in short order, regardless of the size.

@richwicks Somehow that comment got flagged, but not by any particular person. Might be a bug.

Did you post it while logged in, or like this? :

This whole thing has become a 'hail Mary' pass for the Democratic Party. Mt left Democrat co-workers become excited at the slightest suggestion that thing are o at least maybe better than we are being told.
I do not totally agree with this guy, but, he has an interesting view:
https://www.kitco.com/news/2020-03-25/Robert-Kiyosaki-says-self-isolation-is-making-people-realize-they-got-screwed-by-system.html
But this guy is worth reading; “The current coronavirus disease, Covid-19, has been called a once-in-a-century pandemic,” he says. “But it may also be a once-in-a-century evidence fiasco,” with policymakers relying on “meaningless” statistics based on unreliable samples":

If someone gives you one penny today, 2 pennies tomorrow, 4 pennies the following day and so on, how much money have you received have after 31 days ?

Do you think it's more than 50,000 dollars ?

More than 200,000 dollars ?

Calculator time 2^30 = ?

I think your math is off here. If you're trying to sum 2^0 + 2^1 + 2^2 + ... 2^30, The answer is: 2^31 - 1.

There's also a question of what "after 31 days" means. Does that mean you also get a payment of 2^31? If so then you're looking at 2^32 - 1.

Answers are in pennies, so, as you mentioned, divide by 100 to compare to dollars.

What? You're talking like some of our Patnet drunks right now. That post was around noon central time too.

I get it's spring break or your job is shut down likely, but WTF was that comment? Seriously? It makes no sense... unless English isn't your first language.

People in Angola are simply disobeying the orders to stay home.

https://www.france24.com/en/20200405-better-die-of-this-disease-than-starve-angolans-defy-virus-lockdown

"How can anyone stay home without anything to eat?" asked Garcia Landu, a motorcycle taxi driver in the bustling Angolan seaside capital of Luanda.

He ventured out to try and earn a living, defying the government-ordered anti-coronavirus restrictions.

"We have responsibilities towards our families. We have to go out and get food," said Landu, sporting a helmet in the national red-and-black colours.

It's "better to die of this disease or a gunshot than to starve to death," he said. "To starve to death, I will never, ever accept that. I can't".

Days after the government declared a state of emergency and imposed restrictions on March 26, crowds continue to mass at markets, in front of shops or by water points in Luanda.

Under the restrictions, President Joao Lourenco has banned travel, meetings and public activities as the country reported 10 infections with two deaths.

The Muslims in Bradford actually inspired me; they got the British Government to back down on LGBTQ.

Imagine, imagine, if ordinary,non-pink haired or elderly hippies got mad enough to do things like picket while keeping their kids from school until the "Holy Expert Authorities" backed down.

Imagine California having to explain why the arrested 200 protesting small business owners after letting 1000s of criminals out on early release.

Imagine California having to explain why the arrested 200 protesting small business owners after letting 1000s of criminals out on early release.

California leaders will not have to explain anything. Business owners will disperse as soon as the cuff/fines come out. Remember, this California government is in power without having to "explain" the excess homeless numbers, the feces everywhere, and the total lack of immigration enforcement.
