Most people will be keeping their jobs. Some are working from home and some continue working, at their usual location.. What percentage of people do you think are taken off the payroll of whatever type of work they do ? And if so wouldn't they have unemployment benefits ?

Whatever the percentage is, the govt is talking about some kind of aid for them. If it's a business that takes a hit. The govt can give tax breaks for this and other types of support.
It may be just a couple weeks until we know where we stand. I don't even know anyone with the virus.

On one level this is true. But the problem has been how to keep the oldsters from overwhelming the health system. This puts everyone at risk. The extremely contagious nature of the virus makes it nearly impossible to self "lock down" most old people. I don't have a guess of percentage. Remember that however much the economy has been pumped up by Trump, a shit ton of people are still working multiple jobs just to keep the lights on and have a place to live. If you think local unemployment offices are going to process the flood of people that are about to come, you're crazy. You clearly haven't been unemployed or know anyone that has. You don't just push a button and start getting a check every week....

And back to the multiple job thing. Those people won't qualify for unemployment if they're an on the books employee. But they won't pay the rent because they needed that 2nd job. The restaurant owner is eating a weeks worth of food and now not buying next weeks. What happens to the food supplier? There's talk of this going into fucking June! The safety net money isn't there. It will have to be printed. Just read an article that Mitt Romney is suggesting a $1k payment to all adults. A Republican is suggesting this! This is as fucking real as it gets.

I believe you work for the government. My wife gets contracts from the government. We're likely okay. But this is more serious than you think.

You really think this is just three weeks? School is done for the spring this year. I don't think my kids go back. I'd bet a small amount of money on that. Rich mother fuckers like NBA owners DON'T shut down until June or July for no reason. There is information that we don't have. Remember the NBA is huge in China. The playoffs are where they make their $$$ outside of merchandise and ticket sales.

I was nonchalant about this early on, but I'm starting to get more and more concerned. We're either not getting information or this is purposefully being overhyped for whatever reason. So locking everyone up works better??? That's where we're going. Older people need to be vigilant and I'm sticking to my guns on this. They need to be quarantined in their homes at minimum. Fine them if they leave. It's harsh and we're not going to agree obviously. All the data is showing that it's exclusively old people dying, no different than the flu, except that actually kills kids... I'm actually okay with 60+ people getting $2k/mo or something from the government to keep them inside.

Until a vaccine is made for this, older people need to stay inside. We can't just shut down the largest economy in the world though because nursing home patients are dying from basically the flu. Again, it's not complicated. Offer them assistance and tell them to stay the fuck home.

No. But I'm looking forward to when more testing has been done, and not just of people with symptoms. The CDC and W.H.O will eventually have a better understanding of this.

And sure even in two weeks. the number of cases in the U.S., even if only cases of people that are very ill will tell us a lot. It won't be over by any stretch, but we may have an idea of whether this social distancing was necessary or not, and we might be albe to see a slow down by then. But it will have been necessary anyway, becasue of what we don't know at this point.

It's called flattening the curve. It has to do with the total number of people that get the virus as well as how soon, which as far as people know might be in the hundreds of millions in the US alone. Hopefully not.

In fact, I would say the ones who taut their intellectual superiority are more likely the ones who just discovered the grade school story about "take one grain of rice, double it each day for a month," and then consider themselves smart. From Oct 2019 until now, CDC estimates up to 62,000 deaths by the flu in the US. So far less than 3,000 have died from COVID-19 in the US. Maybe you can spin this as the only reason more did not die from COVID-19 is that so many were killed by the flu first. Maybe if the rate of deaths does slow down, some can dazzle us with their knowledge of "logarithmic growth."
