Can you make money off of a blog?

I read a few blogs, and notice that quite a few seem to have a readership of older folks, pessimists, doomsters, etc. Two that are in occasional rotation are Of Two Minds and Mush Shedlock. Both try to establish analytical credibility, but it's always the same - things are bad, things are getting worse, this is why that won't work, etc. On many of these blogs, the blog's owner's story and personality also become part of the show as in Wolf Street, Naked Capitalism and The Market Ticker.

With the aging population and the accompanying health complaints, accumulated regrets, inflexibility and adversity to change, and the big one - retirement insecurity, can money be made fueling these feelings and giving folks a format on which to vent?

You can make money off of blogging. I personally know several multi millionaires who made their wealth via blogging.

I never could make much off of this site, even when it was the top result for "real estate", and so decided that it's just for fun. Hosting is reasonably cheap so I don't really need to cover it.

I know Charles Hugh Smith of Of Two Minds from meeting him, and Mish via email conversations. They're both fine guys. Happy if they made it work.

Pessimism probably does sell better, but I think things are OK and getting better on average in the long run. What can you sell with an attitude like that?

Definitely not a few packets of instant mashed potatoes and tomato seeds in a coffee can for $99 plus $10 S/H!

Not sure if this makes sense, but porn does well selling a positive experience that you can watch. But you're correct, negativity sells.

I personally don't get it having had issues myself hanging onto the negative in my own head. Reality is most people, especially Americans live a life that is unprecedented and we're so spoiled. Enjoy it and stop bitching. We literally give people free food because they're lazy. Really just think about that for a minute.
